Native American trackers to hunt bin Laden
The Australian ^ | March 12, 2007 | Unsigned

WASHINGTON: An elite group of Native American trackers is joining the hunt for terrorists crossing Afghanistan's borders.

The unit, the Shadow Wolves, was recruited from several tribes, including the Navajo, Sioux, Lakota and Apache. It is being sent to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to pass on ancestral sign-reading skills to local border units.

In recent years, members of the Shadow Wolves have mainly tracked smugglers along the US border with Mexico.

But the Taliban's resurgence in Afghanistan and the US military's failure to hunt down Osama bin Laden - still at large on his 50th birthday on Saturday - has prompted the Pentagon to requisition them.

US Defence Secretary Robert M.Gates said last month: "If I were Osama bin Laden, I'd keep looking over my shoulder."

The Pentagon has been alarmed at the ease with which Taliban and al-Qa'ida fighters have been slipping in and out of Afghanistan. Defence officials are convinced their movements can be curtailed by the Shadow Wolves.

The unit has earned international respect for its tracking skills in the Arizona desert. It was founded in the early 1970s to curb the flow of marijuana into the US from Mexico and has since tracked people-smugglers across hundreds of square kilometres of the Tohono O'odham tribal reservation, southwest of Tucson.

Well if the Redskins do find him then they can administer some punishment like being buried up to his neck with honey dribbled on his head for the ants and bees. Or maybe a scalp is worth 25 million, or majority share in a whiskey distillery.

Oh I'm so horrible. I should be re-educated.

"So what do we do with him if we take him alive?"

The dimocRATS will want him to come to the US and go on a speaking tour. Then they will get him enrolled in Yale so that he can get a law degree and represent his buddies in Gitmo. That is how it works in their world. He is really just misunderstood you know?

I don't understand why this particular piece of information need to be kept quiet. It's not like we haven't had all sorts of trackers [human and electronic] after bin Laden for years. What's the big deal about these?

Should that be public information?

No friggin' way...unless of course it's disinformation. My head now officially hurts.

This is a silly idea and probably not true (at least for the American Army).

1. Afghanistan is not the SW desert of America.

2. OBL doesn't travel by horse or foot.

3. We already have expert trackers and hunters - They are called Special Forces Soldiers. They can also do things like call in Air Support, provide trauma care and infil by parachute.

4. Maybe, just maybe, as an embedded team member for a special circumstance - they may be useful

I think the article implies that the unit will be training certain types of fieldcraft to the guys operating behind the lines. I didn't get the feeling that they will be doing the actual patrolling.

You would hope that all the billions we have spent on technology would solve this problem. However, I know a Lakota Sioux that I swear can track butterflies over granite.

These guys are extremely efficient. I'm guessing it's only a matter of a week or two before they have a casino up and running.

25 mil is pretty good seed money.

Too bad we can't give 'em another 100 mil to 'find' Saddam's WMD. The rats would perma-melt.
