He said, I am making a few calls and I think its a great idea, said one Senate Republican who heard {Howard} Baker discuss his efforts to advance Thompsons prospects. Thompson has told allies in recent days that he is exploring seriously a bid for president in 2008 in response to what he has described as strong encouragement from Republicans dissatisfied with the current slate of candidates.

I like Fred. He is a heavyweight, and would shut the mouths of most of the "Rudy is the only one who can win" crowd.

Fred never has explained how a good old boy country lawyer from Tennessee ended up as a District Attorney in NYC. Other than that, I really like this guy...

People know people. I am sure that Thompson's credentials could get him a big political job just about anywhere in the country.

I guess I don't know much about his politics, record. Pro life? Pro gun? Anyone?

NEGATIVE:
- Thompsons work helped to uncover the scandal that forced the resignation of President Nixon.
- his longtime friendship with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Thompson was one of only four Republican senators to endorse McCains 2000 presidential campaign
- was an important ally in McCains effort to pass campaign-finance reform in 2002. BIG FREAKING NEGATIVE!
POSITIVES:
- Thompson ... is leading an effort to raise money for Lewis Scooter Libbys legal defense fund
- has called on President Bush to pardon Libby, who was convicted this week of making false statements and obstructing justice.
Don't know about POTUS, would rather to see him on SCOTUS, subject to more research. Would he select McLame as his running mate? I want a pledge that it wouldn't happen.

I don't think Thompson should allow his friendship with McCain influence his decision, although it doesn't surprise me that it is an issue for him to consider because he seems like the kind of person who would take personal loyalty seriously. McCain is a non-starter in both the primaries and the general election. Rudy, while he's good on national defense and the war, is so utterly unacceptable on every other issue that he will not get my vote. I'd love to see Thompson get in because I'd sure like to have somebody I can vote FOR instead of getting more of the same from Republicans which is that I have to vote AGAINST the other guy.

Thompson has a lot of charisma and gravitas, but I am scanning my memory because I know there is a negative rattling around in there about him. Seriously, I am trying to remember what it was he did that ticked me off. But I'll check back on this thread later, as I am sure someone is bound to list some negatives.
