CPAC Straw Poll: The Results (Romney Wins)
Hugh Hewitt's Blog on Townhall.com ^ | 3/3/2007 | Patrick Ruffini

Posted on 03/03/2007 2:38:10 PM PST by Pyro7480

Romney wins narrowly while Rudy Giuliani (a client) finishes a strong second:

Romney 21%
Giuliani 17%
Brownback 15%
Gingrich 14%
McCain 12%

On combined first and second place choices, it's a win for Rudy:

Giuliani 34%
Gingrich 30%
Romney 30%

That's not too shabby. Romney's people spent thousands of dollars getting their folks to CPAC. It seemed like every other person in line for Romney's speech yesterday had an official Mitt t-shirt on -- and he certainly was being attacked as though he was the man to beat. Even so, Rudy manages to pull off a near-win by just showing up and has the most first and second place votes.

The question of whether conservatives can support Rudy Giuliani was answered pretty decisively this week.

That is amazing since Rudy was not announced to be a speaker until right before CPAC was to start...

No, it was announced at least a week ago. Maybe 10 days.

I wish she would have used that word instead.

That's what I said on the Ann thread. If Ann would have called him a "girlie man," "silky pony" or "pretty hair boy" and said the thing about rehab we still would have gotten the message, but she wouldn't have gotten into the gutter. I love Ann. I think her books are great, but her most recent speaking appearances have been reduced to offensive one-liners, petty insults and the like.

I think she alienates people from our cause and reinforces the false stereotypes which the media tries to label us with.

Imagine the impact for our cause if someone as smart as Newt and as striking as Ann spoke as eloquently as Ronald Reagan instead of sounding as mean as Michael Moore. Our side would be much better off if Ann could do that --- and I know she can. That's why

It's a waste of her big, beautiful brain.

Based on your comments on this thread, you are pushing hard for Romney. Many others think Duncan Hunter was "the best" - and I agree with them. But, unfortunately, Coulter is right about the big pond/small pond so it doesn't matter that Hunder is true-blue conservative and flip flopping Romeny can buy the election like he bought all his supporters in the audience.

I want to get a link to Duncan Hunter's speech.

I liked Hunter's speech a lot. I think it was much better than I expected. I hope all the conservatives will rally around Romney eventually as I think he is the one conservative who can beat Hillary. Yet, if Rudy is the front-runner and wins the nomination and he doesn't choose Romney to be his VP, I hope he chooses Hunter (this is only assuming this whole Rudy is "the one" thing is true, of course).

WOW, redgirl, LOL! So well said.

I don't know that I agree Ann is so awful for our cause. I have encountered too many people who don't follow events the way we do, but know of Ann and like her. And she actually gets them speaking about issues, they would have ignored.

But certainly a person such as the one you described would be a tremendous asset to the conservative cause! : )

Actually, I didn't say who had the best speech (I was responding to someone else who did) because the only speech I heard was Romney's and said so.

I agree with Duncan on the issues, have known about him for years, like him very much, but don't think he has the charisma to win in the general nor do I think he can defeat Guiliani for the nomination.

As much as I wish it wasn't, charisma is important. I believe Romney can stop Guiliani AND Hillary or Obama. I don't believe Duncan can stop any of them.

I have to go for the candidate who in the long run will be best for the advancement of conservative principles.

I agree. It's not bad to have a tall, beautiful, blonde conservative spokesperson. I just think she could be even more of an asset for us if she chose her words more wisely and acted more like Newt Gingrich than Howard Stern (not the Anna Nicole Smith one!).

You may very well be right! : ) I guess Ann finds it hard to resist. Zingers are her specialty.

If you follow the link to the actual poll results there is some interesting stuff there. The ballots were collected from Thursday morning to Friday afternoon, so some people put their ballots in before they had even heard all the speeches. Only registrants could take the poll. There were 1705 ballots in total.

58% of the people that took the poll were students.
62% of the people that voted were between the ages of 18-25.
2% were under 18.

Jeeze I would win the CPAC poll too if I brought in busloads of college students to cheer me on. LOL!

Honestly, this kind of criticism is cheap. Does it have to be some ulterior or maligned reason for someone besides Rudy to have won the CPAC poll? It's just a poll... and we're still a year out from the real stuff. :-(

"BTW, super MITT home page. Very informative."

Thanks. I got tired of writing responses to posts from FReepers from scratch each time. It was easier to collect my notes in the profile page, and...well...it sorta took on a life of its own. :-)

By the way, the web address for the page is:

and you can direct others to that link when appropriate if it helps.

"Many there are college kids who don't want to be reminded that there is a war vet running and his son Iraqie war vet. They don't want to be reminded they arn't doing their part in the war so dismiss Hunter."

I agree... I hate young people who show up at conservative conventions too!
