I'm no expert on naval tactics, especially the dispersal range between vessels, but I'd guess the best way to protect a task force from that which you mention is to deploy in depth and use some sort of a screen forward with those hair trigger orders and ROE. The important thing is to notify (in a subtle and discreet manner) your potential foe (if a state of war does not presently exist) of the changes.
The message being: Okay you managed to score on our friends from the UK and now we are going to reinforce. IF you try that same crappola with US, this is what is going to happen....you have been warned. No further warnings will be issued.

I agree, there needs to be a no-nonsense diplomatic warning with the naval forces armed to the teeth and ready to rumble to back it up. In follow-up, the Brit destroyer designated to back-up the kidnapped inspection teams could not go to them because the water was too shallow and was unable to provide support from their position in time. Bet the Iranians had been keeping that operation under surveillance for a while looking for a reason to strike realizing British inability to stop them.

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. The position of U.S. Attorney is one of the most important jobs in the Justice Department. U.S. Attorneys are appointed by the President, and they play a leading role in prosecuting crime and protecting the public.
In recent months, the Justice Department determined that new leadership in several of these positions would better serve the country. I strongly support the Attorney General in this decision. I also appreciate the hard work and service of the U.S. Attorneys who resigned. And I regret that their resignations have turned into a public spectacle.
Earlier this week, my Administration presented to Congress a reasonable way forward that balances the constitutional prerogatives of the Presidency with Congress's interest in learning more facts behind the decision to replace eight of the 93 U.S. Attorneys.
Members of Congress now face a choice: whether they will waste time and provoke an unnecessary confrontation, or whether they will join us in working to do the people's business. We have many important issues before us. So we need to put partisan politics aside and come together to enact important legislation for the American people.
One of the most urgent legislative priorities is to fund our troops fighting the war on terror. I've asked Congress to pass an emergency war spending bill that gives our troops what they need, without strings and without delay. Instead, a narrow majority in the House of Representatives decided yesterday to make a political statement. The emergency war spending bill they voted for would cut the number of troops below the level our military commanders say they need to accomplish the mission. It would set an artificial timetable for withdrawal that would allow the enemy to wait us out. And it would require an army of lawyers to meet the conditions imposed by politicians in Washington who are substituting their own judgment for that of our generals in Iraq. I have made it clear that I will veto any such bill, and it is clear that my veto would be sustained.
To get the votes they needed to pass the bill, the Democrats who control the House also included billions of dollars in domestic and pork barrel spending for local congressional districts. This spending includes things like $74 million for peanut storage, $25 million for spinach growers, and a host of other spending items that have nothing to do with the war. Even with all this extra spending tacked on, the vote in the House was very close. This means that the Democrats do not have enough votes to override my veto.
By choosing to make a political statement and passing a bill they know will never become law, the Democrats in Congress have only delayed the delivery of the vital funds and resources our troops need. The clock is running. The Secretary of Defense has warned that if Congress does not approve the emergency funding for our troops by April 15, our men and women in uniform will face significant disruptions -- and so will their families. April 15 is also about the same time that Congress returns from its Easter vacation. Members of Congress need to put our troops first, not politics. They need to send me a clean bill, without conditions, without restrictions, and without pork.
This is an important moment for our Nation, and it is an important moment for the new Congress. My Administration has presented a reasonable way forward on the matter of U.S. Attorneys, and on ensuring that our men and women in uniform have the funds and the flexibility they need to win in Iraq. It is not too late for us to work together. For the good of our Nation, I ask the Democratic leaders in Congress to seize the opportunity before us and move beyond political statements to bipartisan action.

President Requests Spending Bill Without Deployment Restrictions, Deadlines

WASHINGTON, March 25, 2007 – President Bush yesterday urged Congress to send him an emergency war-spending bill that funds overseas troop operations, but contains no deployment restrictions or deadlines for a withdrawal of forces from Iraq.
“One of the most urgent legislative priorities is to fund our troops fighting the war on terror,” Bush said during his weekly national radio address. “I’ve asked Congress to pass an emergency war spending bill that gives our troops what they need, without strings and without delay.”
The Defense Department’s emergency fiscal 2007 supplemental requests includes $93.4 billion to help fund U.S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in the global war on terror. The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday passed a defense funding bill that includes some domestic spending measures and requires U.S. combat troops to depart Iraq by Aug. 31, 2008.
The House war-spending bill “would cut the number of troops below the level our military commanders say they need to accomplish the mission,” Bush pointed out. “It would set an artificial timetable for withdrawal that would allow the enemy to wait us out.”
And, military deployment restrictions outlined in the House bill “would take an army of lawyers” to sort out, the president said.
The president has been adamant that he would not support such legislation.
“I have made it clear that I will veto any such bill, and it is clear that my veto would be sustained,” Bush said, noting time is running short for Congress to send him a favorable bill.
If the supplemental funding bill is not passed by April 15, the Army will be compelled to consider curtailing and suspending training for Reserve and National Guard units, slow up training of units scheduled to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan, and possibly cut funding for the upgrade and renovation of barracks and other facilities, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told reporters during a March 22 news conference at the Pentagon.
“This kind of disruption to key programs will have a genuinely adverse effect on the readiness of the Army and quality of life for soldiers and their families,” Gates said at the news conference.
Bush concurred with Gates’ assessment, noting that implementation of the U.S. House of Representatives’ war spending bill in its present form would hurt the military.
“Our men and women in uniform will face significant disruptions – and so will their families,” the president said.

Monday, March 19, 2007 - BEIRUT: Tensions ran high on Sunday at the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp, where an estimated 150 to 200 members of the militant off-shoot of Fatah al-Intifada, Fatah al-Islam, were holed up despite pressure from camp residents, security sources said. With a beefed-up Army presence around the Tripoli-based camp, the possibility of an armed confrontation loomed large.
"Any individuals belonging to either Fatah al-Intifada or Fatah al-Islam who are wanted by the judiciary will be detained by the army if they leave the camp," a source at the Defense Ministry told The Daily Star.
The source said that the army did not have a list of wanted individuals.
A separate security source said pressure from inside the camp "will likely force Fatah al-Islam out of the camp."
The senior security adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Jibril Rajoub, in Beirut for an academic conference, told The Daily Star on Sunday that the situation in Nahr al-Bared "needs to be treated carefully by Palestinians in conjunction with the Lebanese government so as not to harm Lebanese-Palestinian relations and threaten coexistence in Lebanon."
Rajoub said that Fatah al-Islam "has nothing to do with the Palestinian cause and does not serve the cause." Rajoub had given a news conference on Saturday, in which he said that "the resistance should only be in Palestine and nowhere else."
A delegation of community leaders and merchants from Nahr al-Bared, objecting to the presence of the militant group in the camp, submitted a formal objection on Saturday to the camp's Popular Committee.
The delegation asked the committee to "find an immediate solution to the Fatah al-Islam group," stressing the deteriorating economic situation inside the camp. The delegation stated doubt, however, as to the group's alleged involvement in twin bus-bombings on February 13 in Ain Alaq that killed three people, and other terrorist plots the faction is accused of planning to carry out.
Four suspects in the Ain Alaq bombings currently in custody have claimed to be members of Fatah al-Islam, placing the whole militant group in the cross-hairs of Lebanese security forces.

Ukraine sells Kolchuga to Iran

The Kolchuga is intended to detect the take-off and formation of aircraft groups at ranges beyond those of existing radar, as well as determine the course and speed of targets while designating them for air-defence systems. It can identify aerial targets through their emissions and identify the mode of aircraft weapon control systems.
Three Kolchuga stations would normally operate along with a command vehicle to provide accurate triangulation on a target. The system is claimed to have a range of 600 km (narrow beam) or 200 km (wide beam) along a front of 1,000 km.
It is not known how many Kolchuga stations Iran has acquired. However, sources told Jane's that each costs about USD25 million, with deliveries either recent or imminent.

Egyptian authorities found three tonnes of explosives in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula, a security source said on Saturday. "The TNT explosives were found in a warehouse hidden under agricultural land in the Al-Towayel area," the source said, adding that they were hunting those involved in the cache.
The explosives could belong to disgruntled local Bedouin tribes who are suspected of being behind a number of terrorist attacks against Red Sea tourist resorts in southern Sinai over the last three years.
On February 23, Egyptian security forces discovered a tonne of explosives near the border with Israel, while on February 4, arms caches containing rockets and grenades were discovered. Israel has long complained that Egypt is not doing enough to stem the flow of weapons and explosives into the Palestinian territories, though there have been announcements nearly every month of caches being discovered.

DEEP in a violent and lawless slum just north of the Lebanese coastal city of Tripoli, 12 men whose faces were shrouded by scarves drilled with Kalashnikovs. In unison, they lunged in one direction, turned and lunged in another. "Allah-u akbar," the men shouted in praise to God as they fired their machine guns into a wall. The men belong to a new militant Islamic organisation called Fatah al Islam. Its leader, fugitive Palestinian Shakir al-Abssi, has set up operations in a refugee camp where he trains fighters and spreads the ideology of al-Qaeda.
He has solid terrorist credentials. A former associate of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq who was killed last summer, Abssi was sentenced to death in absentia along with al-Zarqawi over the 2002 assassination of a US diplomat in Jordan, Laurence Foley. Just four months after arriving in Lebanon from Syria, Abssi has a militia that intelligence officials estimate at 150 men and an arsenal of explosives, rockets and even an anti-aircraft gun.
During a recent interview, Abssi displayed his makeshift training facility and his strident message that America needed to be punished for its presence in the Islamic world. "The only way to achieve our rights is by force," he said. "This is the way America deals with us. So when the Americans feel that their lives and their economy are threatened they will know that they should leave."

An Islamic terrorist cell plotting to send suicide bombers against British and other foreign tourists in Morocco has been smashed, the country's security chiefs claimed yesterday.

Muslim Brotherhood: Egypt constitution amendments would bring dark future

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood said on Sunday that changes to the country's constitution would usher in a dark future for the country. Hundreds of riot police deployed in downtown Cairo on the eve of a referendum on the constitutional amendments which rights groups and opposition activists say are a step backward for freedom and democracy.
"Based on these amendments, unless God shows mercy on us, the future for this country is dark," Brotherhood leader Mohamed Mahdi Akef told Reuters in an interview. "They've killed off everyone's hopes. Even those with a shred of hope had it killed off."

I wrote last week about the "flying imams"' federal lawsuit, which sets a new low in efforts to intimidate passengers concerned about air travel safety. Buried in Paragraph 21 of the imams' complaint is a legal landmine: The imams plan to sue "John Does" -- innocent bystanders -- who alerted the authorities about their security concerns. Since then, volunteer defenders of the John Does have stepped forward, locally and around the country.
Dr. Zudhi Jasser, an Arizona physician who heads the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, offered to raise money to pay the defendants' legal costs. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty in Washington, D.C. -- whose clients have included Christians, Jews, Muslims and Hindus -- offered to represent the John Does without charge. Eleven members of Congress, including Minnesota's John Kline, are co-sponsoring legislation that would bar suits against individuals who report "suspicious behavior" to security personnel in good faith.
But the real bull in the imams' china shop is right here in Minnesota. Like some legal equivalent of Hulk Hogan, Gerry Nolting of Minneapolis law firm Faegre & Benson, came storming out of his corner last week.
