A Senate hearing that began with glowing tributes to a St. Louis businessman and his qualifications to become ambassador to Belgium turned bitterly divisive Tuesday after he was criticized for supporting a controversial conservative group.
Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., grilled nominee Sam Fox about why he donated $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 presidential race. The group of Vietnam veterans made unsubstantiated allegations against Kerry — then the Democratic presidential nominee — and charged that Kerry did not deserve the medals he won in the Vietnam War.
"Might I ask you what your opinion is with respect to the state of American politics as regards the politics of personal destruction?" Kerry asked near the end of the hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Fox, one of the nation's most generous contributors to Republican candidates and causes, said he shared Kerry's concerns that politics "has become mean and destructive."
Fox said he didn't recall who asked him to give to the group and blamed partisans on both sides for contributing to so-called 527 groups that are not subject to conventional campaign finance rules.
"So is that your judgment that you would bring to the ambassadorship, that two wrongs make a right?" Kerry asked.
"I did it because politically it's necessary if the other side's doing it," Fox said.

Steele said that the reason black people were "drawn" to Pres. Clinton was because of the Monica Lewinski deal...that black people "knew how Pres. Clinton felt, by having the whole world against him...and having to overcome that kind of being put down"...
I was pretty surprised at that remark myself.
Well, we know he did not spend Christmas in Cambodia as he said in his treatise. We know he had a piece of rice pulled out of his butt. We know that the majority of Swift Boaters who were on the boat with him hated his guts and knew him for a self-promoter. We know that he "staged his 'razing' of the Viet Nam village with his own litter personal video camera before anyone had one. We know his is a giggilo. We know he never did an honest days work in his sorry, pathetic existence. We know he has lived off of his wifes' tit, or his other wifes' tit, or the federal governments' tit ever since he was 18 years old. We know he was championed in the North Viet Nam Museum to the Communist who murdered millions. We know he came home from the war with 3 purple hearts, never having spent 1 hour in a hospital facility for his alleged wounds. We know he ran with Jane Fonda and her ilk to denegrate the fight against communism, then was elected to the senate and continued to propound their position, and does even to this day. Mr. Kerry, you are a shame to your country, and thank God for the Swift Boaters who did not shrink from what, I am sure, was an unpleasant duty to their country, the exposure of one John Kerry.

Though a huge fundraiser for all causes Republican, Mr. Fox was also a big supporter of the embryo-destroying Amendment 2 in MO last year: " Big Republican names -- former Sen. John Danforth, Gov. Matt Blunt and party contributor Sam Fox -- support the amendment. The $2 billion-endowed Stowers Institute in Kansas City, funded by GOP benefactors, spearheads the campaign. "

but, the reporter also..missed that bit of irony.
I wonder if Mr. Obama and jon carry would think more kindly of him, had they known that??
