I'm 90 miles from Cuba and I'm going to purchase a new handgun for a new house.

I'm open to all opinion and option.
I'm still holding out the thought of a revolver over an automatic for ease of maintenance in the subtropics
These threads are always informative and I would appreaciate your input before I make a final decision.

Never shot one. Seen a few at the gun shows, I always considered them more of a novelty. Big heavy pistol, but your a big guy... I'd have to try one before I could make a judgement.
I prefer Rugers, but that may just be me... I've never really been comfortable with Glocks, something about them just doesn't rub me right.
The "judge" gun itself is unweildy...pick one up.
If it weren't for the fact that it would wake the neighbors, I'd say I'd take you on with my seven shooter vs. your semi-shotgun.
Besides, the spackling job will be WAY less tedious with the .357....!!!
Like I said, with the hard cast bullets, with the .357 ...even if the intruder held up one of the neighbor kids as a shield...

That's what I was talking about in the post above. If you are in a good defensible position with your loved ones accounted for, I do not think it is a bad idea to announce your presence and the fact the fact that they will die if they do not leave.
I agree with you, shooting someone that doesn't deserve it is something I cannot live with either. However, taking warning shots is a great way to hit something, or someone unintentionally.
However, the first rule of having a deadly weapon is that you must be willing to use it. If morally or emotionally, you cannot shoot someone to protect yourself, you should not have a gun for self protection. The best weapon for self protection is one that you will use if needed.
It's ideal for concealed carry, as well as home protection. A supremely manageable .45 that, in my opinion, has less recoil than a Glock.
Nah, it's not just you. I'm a righty, but my wife shoots left handed so it's handy to have a thumb safety on both sides like a Ruger. Her only gripe is that the slide release is oriented for righties. Plus I have relatively small hands, so Glock and Sig grips aren't comfortable to me.
To be honest, Elle, I don't know enough about your circumstances or abilities to make an informed reccomendation. I know Taurus makes good guns so you wouldn't be buying junk. I was raised around firearms and was given my first rifle by my father when I was twelve. I keep several guns in the house for personal defense and I think it's a good idea for everybody to do so. I have a Remington 11-48 automatic shotgun and would prefer to use it if it were neccessary to defend my home. I keep it loaded with #1 buckshot and I'm certain nobody I shot with it would come back for seconds. But in a situation like a home invasion you won't always have the opportunity to defend yourself with the gun you want, you may have to use the one you can reach. My second choice would be the Astra .38 I keep in my desk drawer. The 128 grain +p hollow point ammunition it contains would make anybody reconsider messing with me. But you have to be ready to use whatever you choose, that's why I recommended training. Good luck to you, and feel free to pm me in the future if you think I can be of assistance.

I have 2 38's. ONe with a hammer for home and one hammerless for my purse.

Second: if you can avoid it, don't begin a fight with a handgun, but use it as the backup should your primary weapon run dry or suffer a malfunction. begin *here*.

I've found the .40 is the best load for me. I've owned a .45 and 9mm. I found the .45 was a little too much for me while the 9mm was a little too underwhelming, but the .40 strikes me as just right...
Stainless steel is the way to go. Salt air is murder on steel. That would probably limit the choices to revolvers, which is okay.
I'm not an expert on revolvers, but if you go with a wheelgun, I'd agree with the others who've already posted and go with a .357.
Nice choice! Use .45 Colt rounds with a jacketed hollow point. Perfect for your situation imho.
Wouldn't a SKS have accomplished almost the same thing? :-)
The SKS would be close. I prefer the larger capacity between reloads and the ease of reloading the mags have especially with 40s. One mag in the rifle and four spares in a pouch is 200 rounds; that gives you the option of suppression fire... ;^)
I've got 8 SKSs and numbers of other rifles, but reality is, I just like the AK system best. I like the simplicity and they always go bang...
