SANTO DOMINGO.- As evidenced in the last Latin American electoral processes, its probable that Hugo Chávezs political hand is already maneuvering in the Dominican Republics 2008 presidential elections.
Normally, Chávezs until now disguised affections have been centered in emergent figures and not in professional politicians who postulate equal or similar ideas to his in the context of the present process of changes in Latin America regarding its dependency on the United States.
After Fidel Castros handicap in Cuba, the leadership of a new exciting and contagious left seems to a large extent, to be under Chávezs wing and he has also openly acted to support presidential candidates who, at their moment, were neither those of the party in power nor their favorites, not even standing presidents, supposing that they seek re-election.
In the Dominican case, Chávezs options seem very limited.
The profile of a candidate who is akin to the new left must assure, beforehand, that they can garner a decisive popular support to challenge the Dominican ruling PLD partys candidate -who will be chosen in May- and who delivers a redeemer, anti-American and "Latin-Americanist" speech.

It will end when oil takes its cyclical downturn, Venezuela's poverty rate increases from 40 to 60%, and the middle class and military pulls a coup.
