Chavez seeks to support a rising Dominican political figure

SANTO DOMINGO.- As evidenced in the last Latin American electoral processes, it’s probable that Hugo Chávez’s political hand is already maneuvering in the Dominican Republic’s 2008 presidential elections.

Normally, Chávez’s until now disguised affections have been centered in emergent figures and not in professional politicians who postulate equal or similar ideas to his in the context of the present process of changes in Latin America regarding its dependency on the United States.

After Fidel Castro’s handicap in Cuba, the leadership of a new exciting and contagious left seems to a large extent, to be under Chávez’s wing and he has also openly acted to support presidential candidates who, at their moment, were neither those of the party in power nor their favorites, not even standing presidents, supposing that they seek re-election.

In the Dominican case, Chávez’s options seem very limited.

The profile of a candidate who is akin to the new left must assure, beforehand, that they can garner a decisive popular support to challenge the Dominican ruling PLD party’s candidate -who will be chosen in May- and who delivers a redeemer, anti-American and "Latin-Americanist" speech.

Who would want to be President of the DR? There's nothing to steal, and no prestige in the office itself...

However if Chavez is supporting him, you can bet he is the local totalitarian thug wannabe.

The U.S. for years countered attempts by Castro to destabilize Latin America. Chavez is getting away with it in spades. Where will this end?

It will end when oil takes its cyclical downturn, Venezuela's poverty rate increases from 40 to 60%, and the middle class and military pulls a coup.
