Appeal For Courage
60 minutes

Posted on 02/25/2007 6:28:03 PM PST by debbieargel

Tonight 60 minutes will discuss the Appeal for Redress from some military members in our forces. It is my understanding that 1,361 troops have asked Congress to pull them out of Iraq. The Appeal for Courage that counters this appeal has gathered 1086 signatures in only two weeks. Active duty military that support the war on terror, and wish to finish the job, can sign the Appeal for Courage on line. Please go on line and read the Appeal for Courage. This is an important issue. If someone has the link, please post it. Please post any additional information you have on this.

Debbie Argel Bastian Proud mother of Capt. Derek Argel KIA Memorial Day, 2005 Diyala, Iraq

Please spread the word about an appeal for redress that people in the military can sign to show support for the mission:

Appeal for Courage is a non-partisan, grass-roots effort to communicate to Congress the troops' desire to remain in Iraq until our mission is complete.

The effort was begun by the Appeal For Courage 'committee', currently composed of:

LT Jason Nichols, USN

Jason is a Navy Information Professional officer currently stationed in Baghdad, Iraq.

Larry Vandergriff, USA (Retired)

Larry is a retired Explosive Ordnance Disposal vet who served in Vietnam as a Specialist in Vietnam.

Support Appeal For Courage

Groups and Organizations

If your organization supports Operation Iraqi Freedom or the military service, and would like to team up to publicize this site or help bring it to Congress, please email committee@appealforcourage.org for information.

Individuals

Anyone can help by downloading a flyer and posting wherever allowed. Military members who can post at FOBs, flight-lines or on ship would be particularly helpful. Other areas of possible help include:

This is the eamil I sent to 60 Minutes:

60m@cbsnews.com

"It's good you're doing this story. But will you also balance it with the story about the OTHER military petition...the one from http://www.appealforcourage.org

That one has over 1000 signatures as well.

The wording of this Appeal for Courage is:
As an American currently serving my nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to fully support our mission in Iraq and halt any calls for retreat. I also respectfully urge my political leaders to actively oppose media efforts which embolden my enemy while demoralizing American support at home. The War in Iraq is a necessary and just effort to bring freedom to the Middle East and protect America from further attack.

As a respected media outlet it would be ABSOLUTELY IRRESPONSIBLE for you not to balance your story with this story. I can only assume you've not been made aware of the petition at http://www.appealfor courage.org but now you have been. Please consider doing this story as well.

Sincerely,"

Everyone needs to HAMMER 60 Minutes about this! I left their email address cold on purpose.

GET BUSY FREEPERS!!!

Any of the rest here with web sites or blogs of their own need to post a link to it. I did on mine, listing what a shame it is that our Troops should ever fel the need to have to request support from Congress.

This is a great comment that was posted to CBS News.com's online edition of this story.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/02/22/60minutes/main2505412.shtml

"A petition by military members about Iraq doesn't bother me. I'm ex-Army and I know the things a soldier thinks about. A petition by them speaking out against the Iraq War doesn't bother me either. I have no problem with it whatsoever.

What bothers me is that CBS could not, or would not for whatever reason, even do a cursory search to find out that this petition is not the only one out there. There is another one at http://www.appealforcourage.org that states:
"As an American currently serving my nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to fully support our mission in Iraq and halt any calls for retreat. I also respectfully urge my political leaders to actively oppose media efforts which embolden my enemy while demoralizing American support at home. The War in Iraq is a necessary and just effort to bring freedom to the Middle East and protect America from further attack."
1500 character limit reached

"Continued:
They have over 1000 signatures as well and was also started by active-duty military members. I equally applaud both groups for making their opinions known. I DO NOT applaud CBS for covering one and ignoring the other. Was this done on purpose or did they simply not know about the Appeal for Courage?

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt...maybe they didn't know and perhaps would have done a balanced story if they had. Well I bet they know about it now since this has hit the blogs.

It's amazing that with the staff a major news operation like CBS has that they couldn't do just a bit more research to produce a balanced story about service members-both pro and con-expressing their opinions about the Iraq war.
Once again CBS has failed to impress me."
