LONDON (AFP) - British foreign policy and in particular the Iraq war has made it easier for Islamist extremists to recruit young British Muslims, according to a report released here Thursday.
The study -- "Counter Terrorism: The London Debate" -- was prepared for the capital's Metropolitan Police Authority which oversees London's police force.
It is the latest study to suggest a link between British foreign policy and extremism, particularly since the 2005 suicide attacks on London's public transport system that killed the four bombers and 52 commuters.
In a posthumous video message, the man widely viewed as the ring-leader of the bombings, British Pakistani Mohammed Sidique Khan, 30, blamed Western policy towards Muslim countries for the attack.
"There is no doubt in most Londoners' minds that an interpretation of UK (United Kingdom) foreign policy, in particularly the UK's participation in the United States-led invasion of Iraq has been used as an instrumental driver for international terrorism in this country," the report said.
"There is palpable rage at what some consider a disingenuous stance adopted by politicians who deny this link.
"While Londoners generally accept that perceived foreign policy is not the sole driver of extremism in this country, we heard a continued plea that politicians and government officials should 'treat people like grown ups' when it comes to discussing any relationship between the military action of the UK and its allies overseas, and bombs going off in London."
Lord Toby Harris, the MPA's member with special responsibility for counter-terrorism, said in response that no-one seriously disputed the fact that the war had been used as a radicalising tool by extremists.
"The problem of international terrorism in this country predates the Iraq War but the point is that the effect of the Iraq War has made it easier for individuals to be taken down the road towards terrorism," he said.
"That is something no-one is actively disputing."
The report is based on interviews with more than 1,000 people in the British capital over the last year. The authors spoke with groups from young people, women and Asian men, local councillors, business people, police and government officials, about terrorism and their views on measures to combat it.
According to the last nationwide census in 2001, there are about 1,591,000, Muslims in Britain, making up some 2.7 percent of the total population. The majority are of Pakistani origin.
About 607,000 live in London, most of them of Bangladeshi. In the east London borough of Tower Hamlets, there are just over 71,300 Muslims, accounting for nearly 36.5 percent of the local population.

Wow, this is a novel approach to explain Islamic extremism!/Sarcasm off
Iraq is not responsible for "fueling extremism."
The cartoon jihad is not responsible for "fueling extremism."
The pope giving a speech is not responsible for "fueling extremism."
Bush being the President of the USA is not responsible for "fueling extremism."
Etc, etc, etc....
The global jihad is fueled by hatred.
The internet is one of the primary communication tools
used by jihadis that bonds them together as a community.
I see Englamd has its fair share of reports that probably cost the tax-payers thousands, said nothing new nor shocking, had no answers, made no proposals and became a news item by the fact that someone supplied copy to an agency.
Golly jeepers. What a surprise. First off, Iraq war is fuelling anger towards the anti-war, Anti-American, flag-burning, pot-smoking bedwetters by me. Next, if the Muzzies don't like living in a free western country, let their mommies and diddies ship them back to Pakistan, or wherever the heck they came from. I'm sick and tired of cowtowing to a bunch of underemployed, undersexed moon god-worshipping idiots.
Islam fuelling extremism among young British Muslims: report
There. Fixed it for them.

Its just true colors coming out.
Exactly!
Let me be utterly clear here: Bush Derangement Syndrome is fueling Islamic extremism in Great Britain, at home and around the world because it gives the extremists hopes of victory.
Hummm...perhaps among those at the highest level(s) of power, but I would suspect that, judging by the photos and videos we see, for your average Islamo-facist this whole thing is little more than an excuse, or reason, for remaining the eternally bratty 12 year old boy: smashing things, blowing up things, frightening people, throwing rocks, shouting obscenities, setting things on fire, mugging at the camera, bullying the weak, etc. etc.
That's why, IMHO, peaces with and for the Palis will never work -- because despite all the talk, they don't want it. It would mean growing up, settling down, behaving one's self, 9-5, stuff like that? Can you imagine your average Pali busing tables, being a meter reader, clocking in every morning to work at a small factory making electric fans and sewing machines?
You do not get the Islamic viewpoint
Muslims are allowed to do anything they want. Any response or retaliation by infidels is an unacceptable provocation and a reason for war.
OTOH, lack of response by infidels means they are weak and means that Muslims are obligated to subdue them
The real reason behind this is that the Saudis have, for years, been exporting their most radical preachers to the West, and financing radical mosques and madrassahs (Islamic schools) to breed more radicals. In the West we have a whole bunch of unemployable young Muslims who do not know anything but Jihad
And American Demorats.

Good companion article.
The “religion of peace” URL in my tag was a typo.
The URL of the website which exposes Islam for the violent cult that it is is located at:
