I am getting really sick of the Mexican Invasion costing so many jobs in the Southwest Virginia- East Tennessee area. My husband is a brickmason. He is the 5th generation mason in his family- our son is the 6th. Up until just a couple of years ago brickmasons had contractors ringing their phones off of the wall wanting them to do work for them. My husband had to turn down dozens of callers because he couldn't do it all. Things have sure changed . Now, a lot of contractors in this area have gotten dollar signs in their eyes and all that they can see are cheap Mexican workers. My husband has actually had a contractor (real builders that know how to actually build a house are really scarce around here anymore) pull Mexicans on the job that he was working on because he was in such a hurry to get it finished that he couldn't wait the 2 weeks that it would have taken to do the whole job. They will pull in a huge crew and wipe the job out real quick. They waste a lot of brick though (they get paid by the 1000 brick). My husband is a very good, fast mason. His speed and quality is not the issue here. Most of these workers cannot even speak English. It is really aggravating to have lived in a place your entire life and have your livlihood seriously threatened by people that are not supposed to be here in the first place. How do we get rid of this problem? Also, on another related note: It was announced today that there are hundreds of jobs being cut in ANOTHER local factory, Bristol Compressors. I was told several months ago that a construction site in Mexico was marked with a sign that read:" Future site of Bristol Compressors" Is this a coincidence or is there another company by the name of Bristol Compressors?
You mean, aside from the Constitution? (E.g., Article 1, Section 8.) Congress made the immigration laws in the first place -- do you suggest that Congress has no power to change them?
You know very well that the proposed "reform" of immigration law specifically FAVORS illegal Latino immigrants.
It's not a matter of "favor," so much as recognizing that the vast majority of the illegal immigrants come from our neighbor to the south, and therefore just happen be Latino.
So, the differentiation as to nationality starts with the politicians.
There's certainly a racial aspect to the debate -- and you seem to be on the other side of it.
My goodness ... that's the sort of comment one would expect from a lefty Democrat.
First, my neighbor's insurance company investigated if the worker had license, insurance. He didn't. Then attorney's fees.In california if you self employed (without workers)you insured by homeowners policy(where you perform your job). But insurance companies are not stupid. In this case worker had no documents. But court awarded the worker $10000 plus legal fees(about $9000).My neighbor's attorney took about $6000.
Perhaps you should have made that distinction earlier.

Why else would our federal government prosecute and persecute Border Patrol agents and a Deputy Sheriff just for doing their jobs? The feds want to make it safe (no gunfire) for illegals to come across the border.
The States, not the federal government will pay for all the social costs (unemployment, lost tax revenue, health care costs of illegals, increased diseases in the population, increased crime, increased education costs, welfare payments, etc, etc.)
Thank you George Bush.
DING DING DING! Troll is as Troll does! You may have your favorite color in Cupie Doll for this winning observation. Blackbird.
Yeah, thanks : )
This piker would never survive anarchy. The checked pants would be a dead giveaway. Blackbird.
ROTFLMAO!
What about Guatemalans? Do you have a problem with Guatemalans?
The "just wage" part, yes. But folks should not have to compete with law breakers.
Well, our past dis-agreements aside, next time you're in Cedartown, Ga., wave to the handful of non-messicans, they're all my relatives, LOL! Blackbird.
And employeers dont have the right to cheap illegal labor..
Perhaps you shouldn't jump to conclusions. My position was clear from the start.
Spoken like a true intellectual!
Bingo
Well, I could suggest that her family members elect to train for other jobs, but I figured that probably crossed her mind.
Who paid it, the homeowner or the insurance company?
Are you saying that the insurance company refused to pay because the guy was an illegal alien and the homeowner had to pay it instead?
Employers have the right to negotiate the best wage the employer and potential employee can agree upon. Government interference at the behest of labor unions has distorted that right. And the scary thing is, many of the posters on this thread have no problem with, what is essentially, a socialist position (government interference in private business).
