Sick of Mexicans Taking our Jobs
Nelliemae

Posted on 02/21/2007 5:53:58 PM PST by NellieMae

I am getting really sick of the Mexican Invasion costing so many jobs in the Southwest Virginia- East Tennessee area. My husband is a brickmason. He is the 5th generation mason in his family- our son is the 6th. Up until just a couple of years ago brickmasons had contractors ringing their phones off of the wall wanting them to do work for them. My husband had to turn down dozens of callers because he couldn't do it all. Things have sure changed . Now, a lot of contractors in this area have gotten dollar signs in their eyes and all that they can see are cheap Mexican workers. My husband has actually had a contractor (real builders that know how to actually build a house are really scarce around here anymore) pull Mexicans on the job that he was working on because he was in such a hurry to get it finished that he couldn't wait the 2 weeks that it would have taken to do the whole job. They will pull in a huge crew and wipe the job out real quick. They waste a lot of brick though (they get paid by the 1000 brick). My husband is a very good, fast mason. His speed and quality is not the issue here. Most of these workers cannot even speak English. It is really aggravating to have lived in a place your entire life and have your livlihood seriously threatened by people that are not supposed to be here in the first place. How do we get rid of this problem? Also, on another related note: It was announced today that there are hundreds of jobs being cut in ANOTHER local factory, Bristol Compressors. I was told several months ago that a construction site in Mexico was marked with a sign that read:" Future site of Bristol Compressors" Is this a coincidence or is there another company by the name of Bristol Compressors?

"willing workers and willing employers reaching a wage agreement, with minimal interference by the government."

There in lies the crux of your problem. Capitalism involves laws. By your definition "real capitalism" apparently involves no laws. So child labor is ok...amongst a myriad of other rank things. This is where you lose it. Go sell crazy / anarchist somewhere else.

There is a man named Carlos who I am sure is here legally. He is the one bringing all of these workers in here. They are the one who are not legal.

The thing that gets me is that some of the illegals purposely break and waste thousands of extra brick. It took a crew of 5 men 2 days to pick up the broken brick on a recent job they did. They are paid by the thousand brick. Most legit masons do not have this kind of waste. This results in more brick having to be bought than necesssary. Why the contractors still think they are getting by cheaper is beyond me. The specific brick that I am talking about costed over $1.00 apiece.

They are willing to do the work for less... Period. I have no interest in how they get it done for less only that it cost less.

Apparently, the _quality_ of the workmanship means little or nothing to you either. Just so long as you make your quick buck and get gone....

You have to admit, from a personal perspective, it is disheartening that it seems like every year, another line of work gets shipped to India or given to illegal workers. I realize that we're doing OK in America overall, and people said the same thing 50 years ago. However, I am pointing out that it's easy to get concerned about it.

I think it's a major national security problem, actually. We've given over a whole bunch of our manufacturing capability to our most likely opponent....

The problem I have with threads like these is that there is no apparent interest in actually defining the problem.

By far, the best proof of illegal immigration insanity!

That is a major thing that is wrong with the people in this country. We have turned into a disposable society. Quality does not seem to matter anymore. Why is this? Why are some people hellbent on glorifying other countries and spitting on America?

Would you have a problem with them if Congress made them legal tomorrow?

I would have a major problem with Congress. What an absurd question.

You're offering nothing to help them in saying that.

Here's an idea - suggest something to her that will actually help their situation.

It's not an absurd question, just a leading question to which I already knew your answer.

What you're basically saying is, you'd be pissed if Congress made them legal tomorrow ... which says that you're really concerned about something other than the legality of the workers in question.

So what's your real complaint?

Yes and no.

On one hand, since they'd be legal, they are now under US law as far as taxation, SS, wages, etc.

-but-

amnesty rewards illegal behavior, and still does not address the national security issues inherent with such insane rates of immigration. It also doesn't "assimilate" them into our culture. Half the problem I have with the whole thing is that they expect US to change OUR language and culture for them and that's true whether they're legal or not.
