"Cause, of course, Guliani's the fave in the press this time, because he might fracture the party severely."

HE MIGHT? I would say he already is!

yeah, I know:) But I say might, cause we can recover if he doesn't get the nomination. Beyond that somewhere, though, I think it would be irreversible. And that's sad. I hope we can snap out of it.

Right! That's why this debate over the soul of the party is so important right now. Hopefully after the primaries, Rudy will be a footnote in the history of the 2008 elections. We will recover only by staying true to our ideals. And we will win!!

Guliani's the fave in the press this time, because he might fracture the party severely.

That seems to have happened already. I'm just waiting for the Rudybandwagoners to try to kick the rest of us off FreeRepublic.

I figure a U.S. Republican candidate is doing well if the lefty Euroweenie media starts taking hits on him.

I am constantly bewildered by these people who claim to be one party and act like the other party. Could it be there is no sincerity? We need to get these people out.

Unless Romney turns out to have a Mark Foley problem, he is looking like a decent compromise candidate between the Giuliani haters and the McCain haters. I also predict that this time next year, nobody will still know who Duncan Hunter is.

No, they just need to realize the error of their ways. You know, bring them over from the "dark side".

Romney has got to make it clear he is with conservatives on pro life and guns. He has to repeat many times he will never sign a pro abortion measure and never sign a law increasing gun controls.

Also, he has to say any judge or justice he nominates will be a Scalia type conservative, no middle or the road types. He has to say too that taxes and spending are too high. Last, no retreat on the war on terror. He has to say this in the primaries and before November 2008. If he doesn't he will lose to Hillary/Obama as we conservatives will not hold our noses and vote Republican forever.

On paper Romney looks good and obviously is quite telegenic. However, I think the LDS factor will really (unfairly) hurt him in a national campaign.

just guessing, but...

the usual traded non-votes,for those
who, for some reason, believe the otherwise
apparanly generous Congressional vacation
schedule just won't suffice.

not sure how non-vote-matching
handles Senator Vegetable

Does anybody really want Rudy, a guy that didn't have the courage to face off against Hellary in the NY Senatorial race because he was more worried about his marital scandals than defeating the witch?

Rudy may have beat Hellary back at that time and if he had we wouldn't be worried about a hellary presidency right now. I don't believe Rudy can beat her in NY now let alone nationally.. those touting Rudy are going to be in for a RUDE awakening if he runs against Hellary..because she'll beat him.

And before anyone crys 'well he had cancer', let me just say that even John Kerry had prostate surgery in 2003 and that didn't stop him from staying in his race against Bush. A TURP is generally very safe surgery lasting an hour, 4 days in the hospital and within a couple weeks normal activity can be resumed. It's quite common electable surgery. More likely, it was the avoidance of scandal or greater ambitions that prompted Rudy to drop out.

Don't forget he was also the only R among the Keating Five. His questionable actions go back, beyond CFR, and the other items you've mentioned.

I don't think your vote trading comment really applies here, except perhaps to people like Specter or Coleman. And it's not so much vote trading as it is them possibly voting for cloture because they knew it had no chance of success and they figured they could handle the heat from their constituents.

But staying away from the vote alltogether and making a strong statement against the resolution and the entire process, as Senator McCain did, impresses me as an act of high principle. McCain's stock is very high with me right now.
