Is the American Right Ready for Rudy?
UK Observer ^ | Sunday February 18, 2007

Giuliani has embarked on a remarkable campaign to test the waters for a possible presidential bid.

He is touring the country, raising money and hiring staff. He tops the polls for the Republican primary, edging out the early frontrunner, Senator John McCain.

When faced with possible Democratic opponents, especially Hillary Clinton, he trounces them.

The numbers speak a simple fact: Rudy Giuliani could become the most powerful man in the world.

But at the same time Giuliani faces challenges unique among the presidential candidates.

In an age of religious conservatism, will the Republicans really choose a man who is pro-choice on abortion and pro-gay rights? Will the evangelical Christians who supported George Bush support Giuliani?

Giuliani looks every inch the presidential campaigner. He confidently lays out an optimistic vision of America in an accent tinged by his flat, native Brooklyn vowels. 'America's values are still the most positive force for good in the entire world. There's no question about it,' he says proudly to an audience where few would disagree with him.

His talk is punctuated by applause and finishes with a rousing standing ovation as he is presented with an award for his services to the cause of freedom. Then he is mobbed for autographs. He has won some key backers.

This is a feeling gaining momentum in the Republican political classes as Giuliani crisscrosses the country building up a formidable organisation.

Giuliani begins to put plans into action, one name pops up again and again: Ronald Reagan. Giuliani heaps praise upon America's sunny Eighties president. He aims for the same political turf: balancing a tough line on national security with a cheerful outlook on America's prospects.

Not this Evangelical. But, we are being told that Pat Robertson thinks that Rudy will make a good president.

I'm there.

I'd like to see him balance his ticket with someone who's more conservative on the issues where he's to the left of center.

"But, we are being told that Pat Robertson thinks that Rudy will make a good president."

... by people who otherwise think Pat Robertson is a nut. What does that tell you?

I hope everyone remembers that Rudy was trying to stay elected in NEW YORK CITY. He is not a RINO - he has more guts than every elected official in office combined. He did what he had to do, before, during and since leaving office.

"Is the American Right Ready for Rudy?"

No, and we never will be. ...remembering the British letter-writing campaign to urge Ohio voters in one important district to vote for Gore.

In my previous career, I put my living on my advice and decisions...and I survived admirably.

My prediction for 2008...Rudy's got it.

Additionally, he'll do us proud.

As always, it will come down to alternatives, e.g., Hilda or Rudy? No brainer.

I believe most conservatives will not vote for Rudy in the GOP primaries starting a year from now. That is gonna make it impossible for Rudy to get the GOP nomination. Once all the facts are revealed about Rudy`s social liberalism, his big government agenda as Mayor and the questionable events in his private life, social conservatives won't buy what Rudy is selling. Character does matter.

Much of the foreign policy and econ right is already on board; it will take a little while for the social cons to buy in, but most of them will before it is all over.

For example, would the same Giuliani that tried to cut funding for anti-Christian art in Brooklyn appoint judges that would purge the Ten Commandments from public display? I don't think so.

I'm an evangelical. I put my faith in Rudy.

Do we differ on some issues...you bet.

Do I understand that the war with islamofascism is the issue of the day? Oh yeah!

"As always, it will come down to alternatives, e.g., Hilda or Rudy? No brainer."

That is the crux of the matter.
I'd much rather cheerfully drink poison any day, than vote for Hilary Clinton.
It's Rudy by far, if it comes down to a fight between Rudy and Hilary Clinton.

You don't have the votes, RM. That will prove out in due time. Your ilk will prove to have nothing but blanks to shoot.
