Excerpt -

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Friday after Microsoft Corp. tempered revenue expectations for the Vista computer operating system.

~ snip ~

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Balmer said late on Thursday analysts' revenue forecasts for Vista were "overly aggressive." Shares of Microsoft were the top-weighted decliner on the Dow, S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100.

"Microsoft can't catch a break. We're at 20 million shares in volume already - that's not your grandmother trading," said Cummins Catherwood, managing director at Rutherford, Brown & Catherwood in Philadelphia. "Those hedge funds can't deal with disappointment. They can't afford to wait for the impact to dissipate."

Vista has been a major disappointment to the computer world, a warmed-over version of XP really with an overly high price tag, slower performance, technically obsolete out of the box (compared to other op systems like Mac OS X) given the amount of time, and where the state of the art is in operation systems....and the list goes on.

I know lots of people who didn't buy Macs because of the price.

And for those touting Mac OS X, you might want to take a look at 30 days of bugs for Mac OS X, that also has huge gaping security holes.

Those claims of "huge gaping security holes" were absurd. They pose no threat for worms, viruses, spyware or botnets to the Mac community. Vista shipped with more security problems on it's first day that Mac OS X has had in five years.

More like Windows ME bad coverage.

Alright, all you people yapping about Vista probably haven't even used it

I just started using it (Windows Vista Ultimate) last weekend and so far I'm pretty happy with it. I did notice a large difference in many video and photo programs.

And Bill Gates was an idiot for literally daring hackers to attack Vista in his Newsweek interview. He's lost his grasp of reality.

While what MS did with Vista is interesting, rewriting huge portions on .NET etc etc etc.. reality is there is no real impetous for anyone to really upgrade.

Vista will penetrate the market as it becomes the only OS available with new hardware... there is and will be no major rush to upgrade to it.

It was flat out lie by their marketing folks to claim otherwise.

Alright, all you people yapping about Vista probably haven't even used it, so please, enough unless you've actually used it and can back up this yapping.

Why should I learn about the Vista downside the hard way, (after spending the loot to buy it?)
I depend on publications and people with expertise who publish their technical opnions. Moreover, most of the comments I read are from users and it ain't good.

They pose threats, but no one writes virii for Mac OS, how does it feel to be running an irrelevant OS?

The only reasons no one has bothered writing a virus for Mac is because there aren't enough users to make it worth it, the people writing these either:

A: Want to effect as many people as possible

or

B: Don't like MS or businesses/Government in general and just want to wreak havoc on those systems

Writing one for a Mas doesn't accomplish either of those goals.

If some one wanted to write a virus that affected on Mac's they could.

By the way, scripted based viruses for browsers and email programs would effect any platform since all browsers and email apps work effectively the same.

(On a side note, yes, Mac's are susceptible to these, saw it in action at a web development company I worked for in the IT group)

Rewriting huge portions of OS's behind the scenes offers very little visible to the end user.... and that's basically what Vista is.

THey did some interesting stuff, and rewrote huge huge amounts of the OS on top of .NET which in the long run isn't a bad thing....

But from what the end user can see and do, it doesn't look much different....

Basically it will penetrate as it becomes the only OS available with new hardware.

given the huge stock jumps that occured after Windows 95,98, XP and 2000 came out, *any* stumble at all is a disaster.

lets face it folks, Vista is a lemon.

Ballmer delivers sobering message at Microsoft event [tempered the expectations - Vista....]

"The thing people forget is a new Windows release is a chance to sustain the revenue we have, every new Windows release is not necessarily a huge revenue opportunity," Ballmer said, adding that, "people are a little bit over optimistic, or more optimistic than we are about Windows revenue."

Translation: This is a release to just make some dollars. It really doesn't have many new bells and whistles, but hey, we need some money, so here's the new latest and greatest for you to run out and buy.

"Alright, all you people yapping about Vista probably haven't even used it, so please, enough unless you've actually used it and can back up this yapping."

I used it for a couple of months (beta)and wound up wiping it and reinstalling XP. I saw no real benefit other than a pretty interface which just hogs more resources and slows down the computer. Many of my favorite programs wouldn't run on it. Most of the so called "enhanced security" is more for the security of MS and Hollwood. MS reserves the right to delete any program from you computer which it deems "spyware". Given the draconian DRM, anyone would have to be crazy to choose this over Linux as a media center. And I say that being a windows, not a Linux user.

It may very well be, but it's a lemon we're going to be made to consume sooner or later.
