#49...

I agree with all your points, however, some on this board who claim to be social conservatives seem to want Federal legislation that achieves their own goals as opposed to getting the Federal Government out of the way and returning control to the states.

Sorry about the broad brush.

The latest poll I saw, showed your state in love with Huckabee as the conservative white knight, relatively speaking. I guess that is what being appended to Arkansas does to one. Arkansas is just so well, interesting.

I don't have a clue why people keep saying Rudy will bring an end to the Republican Party. Rudy is a REPUBLICAN and IMO it takes nerve for any Freeper to say that. You must be a social conservative because no other type of Repubican would make such a statement. Repubicans are not just social conservatives, they are fiscal conservatives, moderates, and some liberals.

I guess I never understood blind loyalty to an organization. Me, and many others, support the Republican Party because of what it stands for. These principles are in the party platform. If the Republican Party platform supported abortion, special rights for gays, gun control, open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens and strong arm government control of citizens do you really think more people would be Republican then now? You support a presidential candidate who supports all of these positions. You apparently want to "grow" the party with others who support these positions. Why is it hard for you to understand that if the Republican party changes to a party that does support these positions that many who now support the party will leave?

I don't really believe there are enough liberals to support two liberal parties. Those who support conservative principles will find a home. If the Republican party becomes merely Democrat lite, conservatives will no longer be part of it. There are Republicans now who would find this desirable as they denigrate those they label "social" conservatives. This is an artificial construct created by those who are mostly liberal except when it comes to money. There is really no "social" with them as money is their overriding concern.

I can't predict the future, but I can easily see a time when the Republican party either reaffirms it's conservative principles or loses enough of its members that it will be irrelevant. If this happens, the Democrats will become dominant for an extended period of time.

I hope it doesn't.

Huh? Pro God, pro life, pro family, pro individual rights, pro constitution, pro small government, pro low taxes, pro defense conservative here. I favor ripping out the unconstitutional big government programs by the roots. Strip the government down to what the founders intended and it'd be about a tenth of the size it is now. And while we're at it, repeal the 16th and 17th amendments, abolish the income tax, social security and medicare, and return the power to the states and the people as intended.

Agreed entirely, Boss. The GOP definitely has some soul-searching to do. But we simply can't lose the WOT, so we'll have to keep our eyes on the prize incrementally. Many of us are involved in the GOP, down to our precincts/neighborhoods. The primary season, for some reason, has started early this cycle. We're All On The Same Team. We'll see how the political process plays out.

My vote in the general is for the Republican, regardless of who it is. Even McCain (though, like I've said before, I'll likely need smelling salts).

Let's not kill each others' resolve here.

I set TIVO to record the LKL replay. I will watch it once I sign out for the night. As it were, I only caught the last 5 minutes of the first broadcast, and only because I spotted a LIVE thread here. I rarely watch cnn or LKL.

"Every primary battle is bruising"

This is entirely different. If he won the nomination, which I don't believe he will, Rudy would be the most Liberal Republican nominee BY FAR, at least, since Reagan.

Many conservatives have been disappointed by President Bush. Guilianni would be entirely unacceptable to them. Not only will many Republicans do NOTHING to elect him, they won't vote for him.

I don't believe Guilianni can defeat Hillary with the full Republican Party behind him, let alone, with slightly more than half of it.

Amen to that. First things first.

I don't send my Congressman to D.C. to deal with social issues.

Do you send them there to protect unalienable rights...to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights?

Sheesh. Has it ever occurred to you that a conservative can be more than half conservative/half liberal? Is there no such thing as taking a conservative position on most if not all issues? Most conservatives I know don't want government interference into their lives. Let the people decide at the local level as the founders intended. Most states had laws regarding abortion per their citizens wishes before the liberal activist court intervened at the federal level. We need to fight to get our rights to self-government back.

Splitting up conservatism into distinct, opposed, or ambivalent "fiscal" and "social" wings is not true conservatism in my book. Being a "fiscal" and not a "social" is libertarian (and the famous quote, "Prosperity without values is no prosperity at all," comes to mind). And being a "social" without a "fiscal" view is counterproductive. Giuliani was darned impressive tonight; right upto the point of declaring himself "pro-choice." Giuliani may have a future in the Republican Party, but the Republican Party may risk its future in Giuliani if a conservative rift is forced within the Party. To gleefully push social-leaning conservatives over the cliff is a mistake. Rudy Giuliani is just one man in time.

You've just described your argument, and the outcome of the primary fight will determine whether your argument is more persuasive than mine.

This is the point, ace.

*sigh* It's awfully early in the campaign. The first of the candidate debates are scheduled for April 4 & 5, 2007.

There's a good field of candidates, not quite a full field, but enough to make it interesting.

Beware the outcome in the general which will be even more persuasive. Not to mention final.

As a humble Grasshopper I do not know the meaning of your riddle, oh Shaolin Master.

Please explain.

I agree heartily, Jim. This, as you say, "half conservative/half liberal" view of political thought is just weak conservative-lite thinking that wouldn't have a prayer in the Kirk or Scalia schools. This pitting of conservatives into "fiscal" versus "social" is a serious stumbling block that ought to be opposed at every juncture. Those who "pit" rather ought to concern themselves with a conservative coalition and not try to pass off libertarianism or moderate-Republicanism as genuine, freestanding conservative thought.

No, that's YOUR point.

If Rudy wins the primary, there will be a record number of Republicans who won't support him or the party. AND he won't defeat Hillary in the GENERAL.

Too high a price to pay for defeat in my book.

Abortion is a "local level" issue only if you do not believe there is a right to life that is guaranteed by the Constitution. I believe the right to life is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution, specifically the 5th Amendment, therefore it is a right insured by the Federal government.

This isn't an academic exercise, FRiend. This is the heavy-lifting of getting folks to the polls with the MSM doing everything it can (short of melting the polar ice caps) to thwart the Good Guys.

I want Hillary to lose as much as anybody, and if Rudy cannot win his home state, he can't win the Presidency. It's never happened before, right?

Good grief, man, that's our system. The argument has to be fought out electorally. What IS your point?
