Is Ann Coulter good for the conservative movement?
Catholic Exchange ^ | Jan. 2007 | James Fitzpatrick

Posted on 02/13/2007 9:01:47 PM PST by bstein80

James Fitzpatrick has a good article on this question over at Catholic Exchange...

"Would the late Russell Kirk think of Ann Coulter as a positive force in the conservative cause? It is not an easy question to answer. Kirk died in 1994, well before Coulter took center stage. Everyone knows her now. She is the willowy blonde queen of the wisecracking, populist brand of conservatism in vogue on the talk shows these days. She is also a best-selling author, with several books to her name. She once described the 9/11 widows who have become prominent critics of the war in Iraq as "broads" and "millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities." She added, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much."

Has anyone noticed that the good looking, articulate, intelligent women tend to migrate toward the conservative side of the ledger? And, that those with the antithesis of these same attributes tend to migrate toward the liberal side of the ledger? To put it in straight Texas talk; liberal women tend to be coyote ugly, dumb and dumber, and yell and scream all the time. If you doubt me, just take a look at the CNN gal talking heads, heh, heh....

Read the thread title.

Notice anything?

It's a QUESTION.

I answered the freaking QUESTION that the thread asked.

If he didn't want an answer, he shouldn't have asked the question.

Is it OK with you if I answer the freaking QUESTION? Or is it only OK if I agree with you?

Geeze.

Tone is a matter of taste. I sometimes enjoy being entertained while being educated.

Well said.

>>The libs dislike her - what better recommendation can anyone have? It's her badge of honor.

From what I can tell, it's more of a visceral hate. I mean, they go completely foaming-at-the-mouth bonkers, when she comes up. She's been demonized worse than GWB and Cheney, and that's saying something.

Really not much about Coulter. Just a lament about the lack of information on Russell Kirk. Actually on FR we have a summary of what a conservative is according to Kirk: HERE. Kirk eventually came under an antisemitic cloud when he described American foreign policy as originating in Tel Aviv.

In respect to Albert Jay Nock (also mentioned), who was a friend of the Buckleys, it is important to remember in his book, Memoirs of a Superfluous Man, he denied the need for public education. His preference was for the masses to be illiterate; in this fashion they would be less likely to be manipulated by the government.

Both Kirk and Nock did have flaws but they remain worth reviewing, but IMHO they are not required reading for most conservatives since we are more inclined to be people of action and affairs rather than withdrawn polemecist, intellectuals.

As far as Coulter, she came late into the punditry business by being Paula Jones confidante and encourager. Allegedly by some accounts Coulter kept the Clinton investigation alive but Lucianne Goldberg gave it life.

Coulter provides credence goods for conservatives. That is she tells us what we want to hear. She is also contemporary in that she is a person of action more than a person of reflection--although she can do both. What surprises me is all the testosterone panting wasted on a 47 year old woman who doesn't seem to fit the category of a nubile, sensuous Miss America.

The current manifestation of the conservative movement isn't good for the conservative movement.

But to answer the silly question raised by this article, Ann Coulter is great for the conservative movement.

I forgot the exact term when I was posting. You are correct. The Jersey girls are the merriest widows around. It took my favorite pundit to tell the truth.

she is bright and witty and she knows how to skewer liberals, but i did hear her once on local radio in a debate of sorts with a now deceased right wing/libertarian type and she didn't do very well-i was no fan of the guy but he was all over her and she didn't hold her own very well-other than that one instance she makes mincemeat out of liberals-the one liberal who seems to be a good debater is kirsten powers-but i have to wonder how liberal she really is-when she goes back and forth with michelle malkin they sometimes wind up more or less in agreement-i think kirsten is salvageable-and cute too-most liberal women remind me of beasts like susan estrich or her majesty big rump hillary-maybe if we made al qaida detainees in gitmo look at photos of helen thomas and betty friedan they would break and fess up :))

The better question would be, has GWB been good for the conservative movement. Anyone like to answer that question?

In a word; NO!!!

For me it is her witt, backed up by a dumptruck load of facts. The panzie libs go bonkers because they get their head handed back to them in a sack when they try to go up against her in a debate.And.... She is beautiful.

So true - the smartest and best looking are on our side of the aisle. Perhaps those with low self esteem - because of inadequacies (prone to temper tantrums) - take shelter under the 'I'll take care of you' blanket. And there is always an abundance of those who prey on the less fortunate/needy with promises.

Since liberals hate Ann even more than Cheney, I would say yes.

In other wordss, anybody who exudes competence and gravitas is anti-liberal by definition.

Yes, Ann Coulter is good for the conservative movement. But I've never heard of Russell Kirk. Who was he?

I agree. There is something about 'in your face' truth, the left cannot handle, it grates their very core. It needs to be watered down, sugar coated for it to be somewhat palpable to them. When one is filled with lies, one chokes on truth.

"Is Ann Coulter good for the conservative movement?"

Judging by the front runners for the Republican presidential nomination, she's practically the only surviving member of the conservative movement. Of course she's good for it!

The statement that got her into the most "trouble" was that the Middle East should convert to Christianity. Imagine a peaceful Middle East!

OTOH, she needs to limit her speaking out on Evolution, IMHO.

She has a crush on Mitt, methinks.

Perhaps the "Mitt effect" will reverse or atleast neutralize the gender gap...
