If you're looking for someone who can represent the conservative wing of the Republican Party in 2008, California Congressman Duncan Hunter fills that bill far better that any of the top contenders who have already gotten into the race. Here's a short, but sweet primer that may help explain why that's the case.

Hunter more closely supports my values, and I will work for him until the end. I hope you can respect that, like I respect your choices. But to slam Hunter, 21 months out, by saying he does not have a chance, is a bit premature, don't you think?
If you want Duncan as the nominee then donate to him. Unfortunately, money is the ultimate litmus test.
Why all the twisting and turning?
Because I want to win this election and also push for strong conservatism.
Thanks for posting this. I'm not a social conservative, but on the other issues Hunter's looking pretty great.
Right you are. Agreed.
It's early. If you were around for the Harriet Miers wars, you'll remember that many of her supporters thought it was a pipe dream that someone like Alito could get confirmed. If you like another candidate better, that's one thing. But if your only problem with Hunter is that you don't think he can win, I'd say that the race shouldn't be conceded before it's even begun.
I thought this article made an interesting point about Hunter's support for the border fence -- that he believes it's important on humanitarian grounds, as well (he pushed for the first section to be complete before the hot months, in the area where the most people die of dehydration).
Agreed, to a point, but I think the MSM is the ultimate litmus test. Can Mitt withstand the next 21 months of full blown media exposure unscathed?
Mitt is now tied with Gingrich in the polls and both are in the low end. The MSM is poised like a cobra over Mitt.
great site.
Thanks to dfwddr, there does seem to be some inaccuracies in the link I posted with respect to congressmen giving their endorsements. Duncan Hunter has only 7 according to the link. I have no explanation yet but I'll try to find one.
PRESIDENTIAL ENDORSEMENT RACE
The rapid pace of the 2008 White House hunt has sparked a separate hard-fought contest among candidates -- for endorsements
from members of Congress. Starting today, The Hill will maintain a running tally of the race for lawmaker support
based on extensive research and daily contact with campaigns. The list reflects publicly committed backers of 2008 presidential
hopefuls rather than members' private leanings or inclinations.

check this out: " Dear Mr. Reagan, it should be obvious to you now that you can never be elected governor. Please put aside your ego, for the good of our party, and get behind the one man who is moderate enough to appeal to California voters - - San Francisco Mayor George Christopher." Look Magazine
And he is doing so well in the polls, a full 1 %.

Look, I think Hunter is great, but he has NO chance to get the nomination, nor would have any chance against any of the Dem nominees, especially the most likely one: Hillary.
That's a fantastic find!
Hunter 2008!
1% a year and a half before the election...
Sorry...I don't think a little Congressman has the experience of a Mitt Romeny, a Rudy Giuliani, a Jeb Bush, etc., etc.
Duncan Hunter is a little man.
When he has executive experience, then we'll talk.
We all KNOW that Duncan Hunter has little name recognition at this point on the national scene. But name recognition doesn't translate into base support. Otherwise McCain wouldn't be flopping here on FR and in that poll you just linked. Having the support of the base, however, does translate into name recognition downline if there is enough time before the primaries. I think there's enough time. Duncan Hunter is the most formidable candidate running today, and the dems know it and so do the frontrunners. Otherwise, why is there so much naysaying over someone who's just got 1%? I certainly don't spend much time thinking about any other 1%ers because none of them are a threat.
Like Titans AFC wrote, it's "Too early, and too many polls interested in counting Party "leaners" for primary elections - percentage wise, by far, the smallest contributors to primaries."
