Some in party believe he (Giuliani) can win in California
San Diego Union Tribune ^ | Feb. 11, 2007 | John Marelius

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, still basking in his can-do post-Sept. 11 image, got a rousing welcome yesterday from Republican activists searching for a presidential candidate who can win in California.

No Republican presidential candidate has carried California since the elder George Bush did in 1988, and no one has even run a competitive race in the increasingly Democratic-leaning state since then.

Republicans are hopeful they have prospects in the large 2008 field who can reverse the trend by combining liberal and conservative stands that has proven so successful for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“The popularity of the governor shows that you can take the positions that he holds and win in California,” said Duf Sundheim, outgoing Republican state chairman. “I think Giuliani has the same opportunity.”

As for Giuliani, backers say his record on reducing crime and taxes in New York should give conservatives plenty to like. He was introduced to the convention yesterday by businessman Bill Simon, the 2002 Republican nominee for California governor who once worked under Giuliani in the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York.

Simon said that as mayor, Giuliani cut taxes 23 times and reduced the city's murder rate by 67 percent. “That is a record that as a conservative Republican, I can heartily endorse,” he said.

Please explain to me how registration is infringing on the right to keep and bear arms.

If you don't mind, I'll try to explain it to you.

There was a pesky little occurance in Loisiana about 19 months ago. It seams that President Bush knew of an impending huuricane that was about to make landfall in the Gulf of Mexico. So he dispatched the Navy SEALS to blow up the levees and seawalls in New Orleans in order to flood the cities and kill the residents.

To cause further mayhem, riots, murder, looting, and rape in the city, he ordered Mayor Nagin to confiscate all weapons from the citizenry. Now the Mayor's police chief did not conduct a door to door poll asking each resident who owned a firearm. The police went through firearms REGISTRATIONS and targeted those residents to confiscate their firearms and violated their Second Amendment Rights.

I'll let you sift through my sarcasm.

Firearms owners and those who believe in the Constitution do not want firearms registered It is the first step in disarming the citixenry.

And I'll be damned if anyone is going to take my collection of these:

One of my $2,500.00 self defense weapons.

And when the gangs begin to infiltrate your neighborhood, you will be thankfull that people like me are in a position to protect you and your family from being murdered.

There is an ammo shortage in this country because thinking Americans are hoarding ammunition to protect themselves.

"Just dial 911."

Just my $.02.

My post at #111 spells out all the facts on Rudy`s final fiscal record as Mayor. Check it out.

Then chew on this.

On the major social issues, there is no distinction between Rudy Giuliani and liberals like Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer, Joe Lieberman and Algore. Besides being another big government Republican, AKA. liberal Republican, Rudy Giuliani is:

~ Pro-choice
~ Supports Abortion on Demand
~ Supports Partial Birth Abortion
~ Supports Roe v. Wade
~ Supports Taxpayer Funded Abortions
~ Supports Embryonic Stem Cell Research
~ Opposes a Federal Marriage Amendment
~ Supports Gay Domestic Partnership/Civil Unions
~ Supports Openly Gay Military
~ Opposes Defense of Marriage Act
~ Supports Special Path to Citizenship for Illegal Aliens
~ Opposes Tough Penalties for Employers who hire Illegal Aliens
~ Supports Sanctuary Cities/Ignoring Immigration Law
~ Supports gun control and Confiscating firearms
~ Supports an Assault Weapons Ban
~ Initiated Frivolous Lawsuits Against Gun Makers Supports
~ Supports Extensive Gun Registration/Licensing

No conservative in his/her right mind would ever support Rudy Giuliani. Liberalism is evil. Rudy would not deliver us from this evil, he would deliver us to it.

And president Bush's tax cuts aren't PERMANENT.

Would you rather have tax HIKES?

N.Y.C. happens to have a teacher shortage! Would you have liked it if Rudy had cut the employed teacher numbers by 2/3rds?

He's also for vouchers and charter schools.

And no, you aren't "nice"; you are a propaganda spreader.

Really? Then WHY do many people still LEGALLY have handguns there?

And in 2000, when New York went nuts and elected the carpetbagging beast, Rudy dropped out because he was undergoing prostate surgery. The polls were competitive when he dropped out.

True. I saw this first hand when I lived in NY. The pundit nit-wits who make totally unfounded statements based upon hearsay, conjecture and innuendo remind me of liberals who just repeat their liberal friends' mantra: "It's Bush's Fault."

BTW, I was in Detroit on business on 911. The locals in flyover country didn't even watch the TV coverage. It's truly amazing how many people are totally clueless.

It's really pathetic.

Cook County, IL

AWB and soon-to-be .10 cent bullet tax... For all the Rudy supporters who are spinning "State's Rights" talking points to mask him as a "gun grabber", all it takes to nullify the RKBA for FIVE MILLION citizens is a crooked county board.

"Then WHY do many people still LEGALLY have handguns there?"

They don't. Rudy refused to renew their permits and the PD conficated them. The only ones that retained permits were Rudy's good buddies, and Bloomberg took those away. FReepers that had the permits, for a long time lost them under Rudy. Once the permit is denied, the guns must be turned in and melted down. That's what happened to them.

Rudy will easily take NY. Even my liberal friends still living there said they would have voted for Rudy over The Beast. Now, even more so. They know she's a liar, and a carpetbagger.

I don't deny that Guiliani is a social moderate. I take exception to any comments that he is somehow a Big Government liberal on fiscal issues when his track record in New York City shows otherwise. On the social issues, even taking your argument at face value, Rudy's purported position is unlikely to prevail via either the appointment of liberal activist judges or through successful legislation through Congress.

Also, there's a pragmatic/practicality aspect to Rudy's record whereas the nuiances some of the positions Guiliani had to take while mayor of that liberal cesspool to get his remaining agenda approved. Rudy can wholeheartedly be pro-choice, while at the same time opposing Roe vs. Wade on Constitutional grounds. I'd surmise that if abortion were left to the states, New York would have liberal abortion laws whereas Oklahoma would not. Rudy can be pro-choice and still think that Roe is bad law (which it is). Likewise, it'd be logically consistent for Rudy as a state's right guy to be against legislation federalizing marriage. States rights was a lynchpin in Reagan's philosophy. It's a philosophy I adhere to on issues of choice and gay rights as well.

You live in Wisconsin. Have you even EVER been to N.Y.C.?

Rudy went after people (I'm using that term VERY loosely !) were had guns that had been used in criminal behavior, many of which had had their serial numbers erased/effaced. With more than 8 million people living in the five boroughs that comprise N.Y.C., 100,000 confiscated guns, taken from thugs and gang bangers, who had more than just 1 gun apiece, isn't much, is it?

You had to jump through hoops to get a gun license at least 5 decades before he ever was born; let alone became mayor. N.Y. state and N.Y.C. have had strict gun laws and registration for a long time. But that hasn't stopped regular people from having guns legally there.

Bloomberg is actually the poster-boy for the word RINBO; unlike Rudy.

And we're supposed to jump on board with a gun grabber just on the off chance that he'll carry California?

There you go again. I remember your comments on firearms about a year ago. Everything you said then was bupkis. And your statements today are no better.

I was here when Reagan was governor. He didn't seem like a dyed in the wool Republican then, and as president, I'll give Reagan credit for a number of things, but mostly he revitalized the American spirit, rebuilt the armed forces, and cut taxes. After that, there isn't a lot to celebrate.

Can Rudy get through the primaries? And is it all that great to elect a RINO? It wasn't so great with Bush I or Bush II.

Well, the country is doomed regardless of who we elect. The question is whether the conservative holding action is defeated quickly or a bit later.

You're right, I don't see Hunter making friends at a WEF dinner in Davos. I see his view of the United States as sovereign nation and not as some plot of useless consumers that the United Nations has protection over.

LOL! A ten cent bullet tax. So, that's $2 a box. They're hateful, vicious morons. Ah, but most of those 5M voted dummie. It's a Chicago thing. They already had a semi-auto ban, they just added to it. I think semi-auto shotguns are banned now, because they can hold more than 5 2" shells.

You cannot be serious asking a retarded question like that. No, I do not live in New York. But even if I did, it wouldn't make me any more or less knowledgeable about the state and how it goes in presidential elections.

My knowledge is based on what the polls are saying. What's your excuse for giving Giuliani a chance in New York? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Oh. You're a poll troll. That's pretty funny. You make "informed" assesments and subsequent decisions based on a poll?!

Do you make weather predictions based upon the outcome of Ground Hog Day, The Farmer's Almanac, and sunspots?

You should take some statistic classes, understand demographics, political science, economics, and finance instead of watching CNN and MSNBC. First unplug your iPod and turn off the Nintendo.
