Some in party believe he (Giuliani) can win in California
San Diego Union Tribune ^ | Feb. 11, 2007 | John Marelius

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, still basking in his can-do post-Sept. 11 image, got a rousing welcome yesterday from Republican activists searching for a presidential candidate who can win in California.

No Republican presidential candidate has carried California since the elder George Bush did in 1988, and no one has even run a competitive race in the increasingly Democratic-leaning state since then.

Republicans are hopeful they have prospects in the large 2008 field who can reverse the trend by combining liberal and conservative stands that has proven so successful for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“The popularity of the governor shows that you can take the positions that he holds and win in California,” said Duf Sundheim, outgoing Republican state chairman. “I think Giuliani has the same opportunity.”

As for Giuliani, backers say his record on reducing crime and taxes in New York should give conservatives plenty to like. He was introduced to the convention yesterday by businessman Bill Simon, the 2002 Republican nominee for California governor who once worked under Giuliani in the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York.

Simon said that as mayor, Giuliani cut taxes 23 times and reduced the city's murder rate by 67 percent. “That is a record that as a conservative Republican, I can heartily endorse,” he said.

"First of all, Rudy didn't "grab guns" from civilians who lawfully attained and registered then."

Yes he did. He ended the NYC handgun licence system, which was only a may issue anyway.

Yes, he supported Keyes; I know that, I was here and have a great memory. And then he didn't.

Go read some ancient threads;you should refresh your memory.

But since I'm so nice, the tax cuts were modest, he added 15,000 teacher jobs, but yes, he did clean up NYC, but that's not enough. I'm looking for a candidate MORE conservative than President Bush - not LESS.

How is adding teachers to teach children a BAD thing, especially when I surmise either the State of New York or the Federal Goverment was footing the bill for the increase(in an attempt to lower class size)?

Adding sorry sap bureaucrats that don't do not teach on the front lines is one thing, but usually, but 15,000 more teachers to actually teach kids and lower class sizes while paid by someone else, is not an awful thing in the grand scheme of things.

Perhaps Rudy should have said, "nah, let there be a 35:1 student:teacher ratio. We don't want the same funds that are also available to Peoira, Illinois or Schenectedy, New York." That'd be a really responsible thing for a mayor to do.

Do you think that when Rudy confiscated over 100,000 guns all of them were criminals?

I've been told that people have to jump hoops to get a gun in NYC under Rudy and under Bloomberg - BOTH RINOs.

F.O. - I've been following the rantings of the Bash-Rudy MOONBATS here. Most have no clue about the leadership Rudy exhibited in the aftermath of 9-11. I can't think of anyone who could have achieved rebuilding the City the way he did.

I can only assume that these jerks no nothing about him other than he was divorced.

A couple of the same MOONBATS are ripping Newt as well. They think like uninformed liberals who are clueless and just repeat someone else's rantings.

I think the best we can do is challenge their knowledge and reasoning by asking questions. In a backhanded manner I ripped a basher by asking him what experience he has with New York, Clinton, Rudy, taxes, law enforcement, budgets. .. ZERO response.

BTW, where's AreaFiftyOne? It seems she's been very quiet for quite some time.

>>>>I disagree with your premise.

Save your pro-Rudy ramblings for someone who cares. I know all about NYCity, born and raised. The Big Apple was a high taxed liberal socialist run hellhole when I lived there. After eight years as Mayor, NY remained a high taxed liberal socialist hellhole under Rudy.

You've got about 70% registered Democrats and maybe 20% registered Republicans. Who do you think elected Rudy twice. Republicans? Maybe conservatives? There are no elected conservatives holding office in NYCity! Unless you count that SI sell out, Vito Fossella. LOL

Despite all of his charisma and the wonderful leadership he showed after 9/11, Rudy Giuliani is not a Reagan Republican. To the contrary, Giuliani is another Christie Todd Whitman, another Arlen Specter, another Olympia Snowe. He's a throwback to the "bad old days" before Reagan, when the GOP was run by moderate Country Club Republicans who considered conservatives to be extremists. Trying to revive that failed strategy again is likely to lead to a Democratic President in 2008 and numerous setbacks for the Republican Party.

Thank you John Hawkins.

I just checked.......unless you are a retread, you've only been on FR since '03 and missed it all!

Go read the old threads...go ahead; see what they were REALLY like! I was here, I KNOW exactly what went on here from the beginning, when I was just a lurker.

That's very nice, and adds another dimension to Rudy's conservative side. If he would only be so conservative on abortion, the 2nd amendment, gay affirmative action, marriage protection, border protection, punishing illegal aliens, and other vital social issues, he'd be the whole package!

Did you know that politicians often break their campaign promises?

No really? George H.W. Bush broke a promise and was held accountable next go round.

Rudy has to get these "liberal" judges through the House and Senate, just like he has to get the votes to reform the gun control laws.

Guiliani as POTUS is NOT Hugo Chavez. He can't just go grabbing guns because he feels like it. He has to work within the system. Your doomsday scenario is not based in reality.

If you think that adding 15,000 more teachers is fiscally conservative, maybe you're more liberal than you realize.

Ever wonder what they did BEFORE the addition of the 15,000 teachers?

When I went to school...., well never mind, you probably heard that one before.

I guess you're a Republican first, while I'm a conservative first, which is why we disagree.

Oh, is George H.W. Bush running again? Who knew?

If we have a liberal Congress, along with a liberal president, no way will we have anything but liberal judges. "Rome" will burn.

Rudy will do whatever he can as president to advance the gun control agenda, including picking the wrong judges.

I'm not that worried, though, because Rudy probably won't win the primaries, just as McCain didn't.

'nighty nite

" Since Rudy did NOT take away everyone's guns in N.Y.C.; you lose again!"

Rudy ended the hoop system. Unless you're the mayor's good buddy, you can't own a handgun.

I lived through 8 years of Rudy's mayoralty. I don't recall him having "confiscated over 100,000 guns." By what power and means did he do that? Also, the gun laws in NYC have been extremely restrictive for many decades. Long before Rudy became mayor. He did not create those laws. I hate the gun laws in NYC but Rudy is not to blame for the situation.

If you know NYC, you well know the challenges Rudy faced with a whacko city council that loves the socialist agenda.

Despite those moonbats, he accomplished a ton of Regan-Republican reforms in that liberal hell hole and significantly improved the quality of life in NYC.

Remember the bad days under Dinkins? Graffiti and crime everywhere. The cops held hostage to do anything to offfend the minority community. New York City was a joke. Rudy came in and cleared out the trash using Reaganesque ideas to achieve his goals.

Democrats don't like lowering taxes, Democrats don't like setting aside affirmative action set aside programs. Democrats don't like reducing the size of government. Democrats aren't as tough on crime. National Defense. And they sure as hell don't want to purge their best voting block -- welfare recipients -- from the public dole. Rudy did all that.

The NYC PD conficated them through "many channels". Rudy ended the may issue permit system, except for the mayor's good buddies. That means thousands of those guns were confiscated from law abiding folks when Rudy decided not to allow renewal on those licenses. Dinkins never did that. The laws may have been very restrictive, but folks still had a shot at obtaining the license. Rudy ended that himself.

I live in California.. and politics here are VERY starnge. Most of the time it seems to be the Liberal Capital of America.... but then Californians come to their senses and become the old school conservatives they once were.....

The Re-Call of Gray Davis was one of those moments...... w/ Rudy it could happen again depending on how the SHRILL ONE is painted over the next year..... get out your political paint brushes, you will never have more fun painting the old bags face red.......

Hunter has far more of a chance of landing in jail, than he has of getting any traction.

His protectionist stance will keep the BIG MONEY MEN as well as the BIG POLITICAL BACKING far out of his grasp. Not to mention the fact that his protectionism is hypocritical, considering the fact that he gave his pals a government contract that they not only were the incapable of handling, but which parts of which they outsourced to INDIA!

Newt has NOT said that he will announce whether or not he's going to run in September; he said that he would BEGIN TO THINK ABOUT WHETHER HE MIGHT CONSIDER TO THINK ABOUT RUNNING. And about a week ago or so, he moved September to OCTOBER!

"Throw in the towel"? What towel would THAT be? I haven't thrown anything b ut my support TO Rudy.

Under Dinkins we had the Crown Heights Riots in which Jews were killed and terrorized. The police were not allowed to use force stop the rioters. Nothing like that happened when Rudy was mayor because the racial arsonists like Sharpton knew Rudy would not tolerate it.
