Giuliani: Gun control helped lower crime
Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.
"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."
He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.
Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."
The nation needs to know, he said, who is coming into the country and why. But he provided scant details on how he would deal with illegal immigrants already in the country. Citizens, he added, should be able to read and write English.
Giuliani was to make an address Monday in Silicon Valley and he was to appear Tuesday at an agricultural fair in the Central Valley.
Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don't know."

In Alaska you don't even need a permit to conceal carry.. i.e. women in their purses
How many crimes are NOT committed because of it theres no way to measure..
NRA Ping!
Every time he opens his mouth he puts his foot in it. But isn't that just what liberals do? Pretty bad when a potential Presidental candidate thinks the 2nd amendment is all about hunting.
You don't regulate the 2nd amendment.
You amend the Constitution.
My idea of gun control is two shots in the same hole.
No way no how does he get my vote.
If its between him and hillary, Im going third party.
An election between Hillary and Rudy is simply a Dem vs Dem election.
It's good that this comes out now before his campaign starts fooling too many people.
Yup. And I'm sure Rudy knows that, but this is the MSM. Note that the sentence in question is not a direct quote. It's just a note the reporter chose to pull from the event.
I'd wait for the transcript. I'm getting the impression the MSM hates Giuliani, because they suspect he could be elected, thus ending their dreams of Hillarycare, and are doing everything they can to sow discontent. Judging from the infighting already going on amongst conservatives, it appears to be working.
I always thought conservatives were too smart to be led by the drive-by media's obvious agendas, but then came 2005 and 2006.
Remember the ports issue? Remember how it tore conservatives apart? After things settled down we discovered -- lo and behold! -- it was Chucky Schumer behind it. Aided and abetted by the media.
Stop falling for this crap. Behind the curtain, it's the old hippies using their 1960s divide-and-conquer strategy. I can't believe so many are buying into it.
Got lots of howls from the leftist criminal coddlers but was very effective, its not rocket science, bad guys most often look the part, you just have to do what law enforcement officers did for 200 years in this country before the hippies took over.
Ultimately this entire debate about Giuliani is pointless, either vote for him or Hillary or stay home, it doesn't matter, Giuliani will pick up most of the independents and a lot of donkeycrat imbeciles too.
His victory will be similar to Reagans second election landslide.
Sorry, Rudy ... you just lost this voter. The 2nd Amendment is more than the right to hunt. And speaking of Hunting and HUNTERS, Duncan, count me in!
Careful NY has CCW permits, but you can't get one, especially in NYC unless you are Don Imus
No to Hillary
No to Rudy.
No to any Gun Grabber.
he's saying any regulation not consistent with the Second Amendment is unconstitutional. Any proposed gun regulation must be consistent with the Second Amendment.
Keen observation and excellent points.
Thanks!
