A Feb. 9 front-page article about the Pentagon inspector general's report regarding the office of former undersecretary of defense Douglas J. Feith incorrectly attributed quotations to that report. References to Feith's office producing "reporting of dubious quality or reliability" and that the office "was predisposed to finding a significant relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda" were from a report issued by Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) in Oct. 2004. Similarly, the quotes stating that Feith's office drew on "both reliable and unreliable reporting" to produce a link between al-Qaeda and Iraq "that was much stronger than that assessed by the IC [Intelligence Community] and more in accord with the policy views of senior officials in the Administration" were also from Levin's report. The article also stated that the intelligence provided by Feith's office supported the political views of senior administration officials, a conclusion that the inspector general's report did not draw. The two reports employ similar language to characterize the activities of Feith's office: Levin's report refers to an "alternative intelligence assessment process" developed in that office, while the inspector general's report states that the office "developed, produced, and then disseminated alternative intelligence assessments on the Iraq and al Qaida relationship, which included some conclusions that were inconsistent with the consensus of the Intelligence Community, to senior decision-makers." The inspector general's report further states that Feith's briefing to the White House in 2002 "undercuts the Intelligence Community" and "did draw conclusions that were not fully supported by the available intelligence."
Almost all the truly damning quotes came from the office of Democratic Sen. Carl Levin, not the DOD inspector general.

Oh come on. Do you have to speak so lowly about excrement? At least excrement, when properly applied, helps plants to grow.
Carl Levin, unlike excrement, works to make liberty wither on the vine.
Because our state has been hijacked by a vile hateful group of voters who believe firmly in getevenwithemism. Those voters are, in large part, brain dead union goons in the truest sense of the term, or they are union goon wannabes. We are also cursed with the most worthless state Republican organization in the country which is incapable of capitalizing on the target rich environment that democraps give them on a daily basis. MIGOP leaders are busily pushing the candidacy of John MeMeMeCain for president.
The ABC radio news shills for the democraps ran with the WaPo misinformation at the top of the hour newscasts all day long on FRIDAY February 9. Of course, the correction was no where on their radar screen. Karl Lenin looks over his glasses and down his nose at us peons for good reason.
Where ever would you get the idea that these journalist would be embarrassed? They should, but they won't. They won't pay any penalty. and someone earlier wondered how Levin continues to get reelected in Michigan. Well, it is a union driven state, and he has a long record of . . . well I can't think of anything. LOL
Here's what is on page one in an article entitled, Senators Debate Significance of Pentagon Report On Intelligence in paragraph 5:
An article in yesterday's Washington Post misattributed to the inspector general's report critical comments about the Pentagon operation made by committee Chairman Carl M. Levin (D-Mich.). In a statement he released Thursday, Levin, not the inspector general, said the Pentagon effort used intelligence reporting of "dubious quality or reliability." [See correction, A2.]
I can't find page A2 on line.

I agree, but if the WAPO wanted to fix it, they would fire the turds; they won't, but the should. They are just digging their grave deeper and deeper. They already had no credibility with fly-over americans, and I think finally, some republicans are growing spines, and will take on the WAPO over this. Cornyn has taken them on over the Arkin mess, maybe he will take them on over this as well. (Dreaming here obviously).

The California GOP must be a close second in ineptitude
(e.g. the pathetic effort against Bow-wow-Boxer in 04). Only rhinoceri like Schwarzenkennedy stand a chance here anymore.
Powerline has obtained an email received by a reader inquiry to Jeff Smith of WaPo. It's fascinating for its confirmation that (1) WaPo DID have the accurate info in advance, and some unnamed reporter(s) other than Smith botched the article so badly. Since the only other reporter's name on the byline is the highly biased lib Walter Pincus, that would seem to suggest rather strongly that Pincus just patched together what he and Sen. Carl Levin wanted the IG's report to say, rather than what it actually did say.

So someone--Pincus is an obvious candidate--had the two-page public portion of the IG report, and also had an accurate account thereof, but nevertheless managed to misrepresent the report's contents to make it look more critical of Feith's group than it actually was. Is there any possible explanation for that "egregious" and "astonish[ing]" error, other than a political agenda that trumps all else?
