EDISON, N.J. -- No disrespect to Thomas Edison, but a New Jersey lawmaker said a lot has changed since Edison invented the light bulb.
Assemblyman Larry Chatzidakis has introduced a bill that calls for the state to switch to energy-saving fluorescent lighting in government buildings over the next three years.
Last month, a California assemblyman announced plans for legislation to ban incandescent bulbs there.
New Jersey is where Edison acquired more than 400 patents for innovations such as the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph and the electric railroad car.
But efficiency is trumping nostalgia.
New Jersey already recommends a switch to compact fluorescent lamps as part of its Clean Energy Program.
The curator of a museum that celebrates Edison in the town that bears his name said the light bulb is an easy target, but even he acknowledged that its star is fading.
Jack Stanley said "that's part of the evolution of all inventions."
New Jersey ping.
how about all the poor folks who can't afford the h igher cost of the fancy PC bulbs? are they supposed to live int eh dark?
They'll be fine. The government will hand out these bulbs like they gave away cheese in the eighties.

The NJ pols will be happy to take more of your money to buy bulbs for the poor so they can get more votes in the next election cycle. See how easy that is to solve?
I really like the new bulbs... but I am aghast at the number of fools who don't see that allowing government to mandate the purchase of certain products is a huge problem.
Liberals like anything twisted...

...agreed. Also, wasn't it the next state over that banned trans-fats from restaurants? No smoking. No driving while on a cell phone. It's all for our own good. ~sarc
LOL!
Simple economics should make this so.
It is possible to manufacture an incandescent bulb relatively cheaply. In fact, most of them are outsourced to other countries already (primarily Hungary and China). But the lifetime is rather short, and as many as ten incandescent bulbs may be used in the typical lifetime of a comparable compact fluorescent bulb.
As it happens, most of the compact fluorescent bulbs are ALSO manufactured in Hungary and China. So it turns out, more light is sold with one CFB, than with the ten conventional incandescent bulbs. The real economy comes from the reduced amount of electricity used, only about 25% as much for the same amount of light as provided by the older design (which makes an excellent heat source, by the way).
If the incandescent bulb is being used as a heat source, it really makes little sense to replace it with a CFB.
I see lots of new web-based catalog businesses developing.
They could start by offering special baked-goods (with guaranteed next-day delivery) to the trans-fat deficient residents of New York city and "old fashioned" light bulbs to residents of the people's Republic of New Jersey.
Of course once the police started inspecting the trashcans, and based on those searches started sending subpoenas to search NYC and NJ residences, our private business would likely be put out of business.

Yeah, and New York is trying to make it illegal to walk across the street while wearing headphones or talking on the phone. I think they ought to have agents on every corner to hold our hands as we cross, but they haven't gotten to that point. Yet.
Next legislation will be to make us wear a "Pedestrian Air Bag" when crossing the street. I can see that coming.

I *think* it has something to do with this:

New Jersey Authorities See Opportunity to Expand DNA Database
I'm assuming more money is granted per DNA entry to the database.
The concept of this database may have been well intended; but not when you have power hungry dictators that want to cash in on private citizens.
With all these social engineering laws, we will all be listed criminals while our overseers make deposits to their Swiss bank accounts.
