Governor Perry has made a huge mistake in signing an executive order which mandates that all sixth-grade girls entering public schools by the fall of 2008 must be vaccinated for Human Papilloma Virus with Gardasil a product of Merck Pharmaceuticals.
A public debate in the Legislature should have preceded such a drastic move, all . careful consideration.
Parents are being told, "We do not expect nor believe that you will stay abstinent until marriage."
The decision to get young girls vaccinated for HPV is not an easy . In less than a year since approval, 82 cases of serious adverse events following HPV vaccinations of Gardasil have been reported. These incidents should have been discussed thoroughly in open forum in the Legislature before any mandate was even considered.

Parents need to evaluate all aspects of the HPV vaccine.. there are no long-term studies yet on the way these sixth graders might be affected in future years when [they] have their own babies. Since the vaccine has only followed girls for five years, nobody knows for sure how long the vaccination may last ...
HPV vaccine only covers 4 of 30 types of HPV which account for 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts. That still leaves 30% of cervical cancers and 10% of genital warts not covered.
A definite drawback to Gardasil is that girls must get three full doses of the vaccine for it to be effective. How many families are going to understand the urgency of making sure their girls get three full doses over a six months' period of time?
The seriousness of HPV has been one of the driving forces behind the plea for teens to remain abstinent until marriage. Condoms do not offer

This is another government agency telling kids "We expect you will act like an animal and be unable to control yourselves." What's next the contraception chip shot into girls arms when the reach ten?
Logan's Run. Die at 21.
anybody who expects government to raise their child is badly misdirected themselves
I don't care where I live by the time my younger girls get to this age, they will not be getting this vaccination. My oldest turns 17 tomorrow, so I am beyond it with her, but my younger ones??? Nope.
"Informed consent? Who cares? We own stock in Merck."
But I thought Perry was a great conservative - that's what I kept hearing on FR before the election...
Sheeple.
Gotta keep these kids clean from disease so their teachers can have sex with them.
Perry's vaccine ping.
Comp to think of it, aren't most of the vaccines finished well before this age?
He didn't just make a mistake. He was flat arrogant about it.
If we can eliminate 70% of cervical cancer through this vaccination, I don't see the downside in such a vaccination.
However I do have qualms about the relative newness of the drug and the government mandate.
Notice how he waited until the election was over to decide this was the wise thing to do?
Thanks GB.
I'd rather do it NOW.
I'd have to be carted off to jail then. My daughters would never be subjected to a government forced injection of ANY kind.
tHANKS
He's term limited and only got 40% this time. He's toast and lining his pockets.
According to this site:

all but the Meningitis shot are done well before then.
They get a Meningitis shot at 11 years? I don't remember my teen getting that.
What I said that out of all the lousy choices we had, Perry was the lesser of 4 evils. He's a Bush clone.
