Ex-US vice president Al Gore's global warming documentary will be shown at public schools across Portugal as part of a campaign to tackle climate change, Prime Minister Jose Socrates said.
"I think the duty of a politician is to divulge a political message so that all citizens are more aware of what they can do to solve this global problem," Socrates, a former environment minister, said after meeting with Gore.
Gore's Oscar-nominated film, "An Inconvenient Truth," warns that urgent action is needed to reduce carbon emissions soon or else the planet will suffer disastrous consequences from climate change.
Last month Socrates announced that his government would work to ensure that 45 percent of the nation's electricty output comes from renewable sources like wind and solar power by 2010, up from 36 percent last year.
The world's largest solar power plant began operating in Portugal's sunny south last year while the world's first commercial wave power station is planned for the country's northern Atlantic coast.
"I have enjoyed my visit to Portugal and I am supporting a lot of the new initiatives for renewable energy that Portugal is launching," said Gore who was in Portugal for an environmental conference.
Several other countries, including Spain and Britain, have decided to show Gore's film in their public schools.
Good little liberal socialists. Brainwashing agenda.
I can only hope it's an English version and they can't understand it.

Aren't there any adults anywhere anymore? Will no responsible person stand up and call this superstitious balderdash what it is? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here.

Pefect :-) Right on!!!
They won't understand a thing he says. Someone tell the inventor of the internet that they speak Portuguese there. :)
He really should have won the Oscar for that.
I consider it an atrocity that Orson Wells won four Oscars for "Citizen Kane," and Will Ferrell's artistic transcendance has yet to recieve the Hollywood recognition that it is due.
ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY should've got Best Picture.
Euroweenies need some more brainwashing.
Most excellent!
