Loyal followers of Saddam Hussein gathered in Yemen yesterday to mark the 40th day since the former Iraqi dictator was hanged.

A crowd of several hundred heard an address by Saddam's eldest daughter, Raghad, who proclaimed her family's "pride" in him.

"No one can ignore that he was a hero and one of the Arab nation's symbols," she said. "He met God with a clean heart and a clear conscience."

She also praised the Iraqi insurgency as a heroic cause: "As long as the resistance and the Mujahideen are fulfilling their duties in Iraq, the Iraqi people, without any doubt, will achieve victory."

The six weeks since the tyrant's chaotic execution have been some of the bloodiest Iraq has witnessed. Figures released yesterday show 334 American soldiers were killed between October and January, the highest death toll for a four-month period since fighting began in March 2003.

The grim news continued yesterday with the deaths of seven marines in a helicopter crash near Taji, north-west of the Iraqi capital. It was the fifth such crash suffered by American forces in 18 days.

Despite a terrorist claim of responsibility, the Pentagon said the Sea Knight, a version of the double rotor Chinook, suffered mechanical failure.

I heard a good one today, Saddam got to hell and was chained down into a terrible cess pool and was up to the bottom of his nose and looked over and saw Hitler right next to him. He said to Hitler 'this is not so bad' and Hitler said 'Naw, but just wait until saton runs his motor boat in the pool'.
