The following from the article gets strong support from me:

"Well, one knows a politician by the company he keeps, and Mr. Giuliani has around him the financial people who created the libertarian-conservative Manhattan Institute. He relied heavily on the institute's policies while governing New York. He will rely on libertarian-conservative policy makers in his race for the White House and once there.

One also knows a political leader by the action he takes. As mayor, Mr. Giuliani took on the nanny state that city government had become, reducing the dependency that had one in seven New Yorkers living off government support. As for New York's huge welfare rolls, he more than halved them and had more than 100,000 welfare recipients finding work annually by 1999. He cleaned up the crime-ridden streets, cutting crime by 64% and murder by 67%. By cutting spending and taxes, he turned an economic basket case into an economic marvel. In eight years he reduced or extinguished 23 taxes. Every year he was in office, New York City's economy grew faster than the nation's.

"...I was careful to note that though the movement embraces contending factions, they all come together at election time."

That was then, this is now. Social, religious and gun-owning conservatives are not going to support Giuliani. They will not be persuaded to vote for a gun-grabbing abortionist, period.

Yep. We keep getting sold down the river, bit by bit. Just think, if WE conservatives, hadn't kicked up such a fuss about the Harriet Miers nomination - we might have had a different judge. We can't be cowed down - we have to make our voice heard. We can never afford to rest - because every time we do - they try to slip something in that is unacceptable to most conservatives.

I'm going to try something here..start a dialogue. You've said that you won't vote for Rudy, period. Your reasons why, ( abortion, guns, etc) I agree with your views on. I'm not going to cite statements Rudy has made of late, (for example to the effect that he is opposed to abortion, or on the type of judges he will appoint) rather, I'm going to ask you if you're willing to LISTEN to him as he tries to make the case that he merits your support and vote. That's all. No more, no less..If he makes the case, fine, if not, then you're free to sit out the campaign.

I believe that national security , the War in Terror, is the ONE overriding issue of the 2008 campaign, and that Rudy is the ONLY Republican who gets it, and has a good chance of being elected. That's my reason for supporting him.

We here accuse the left, correctly, of having a "closed mind." Are we to have the same charge made against us?

On Fox Roundtable last nite....

BARNES: The truth is, I think he has an excellent chance of winning the nomination. I wouldn't make him the frontrunner right now, I think the McCain still is. But people like him. There's a reason why his polls have stood up so well, it's not because voters are stupid and don't know about his social liberalism, which is there. But he's not running on it. He's running on these other things and he's not trying to stick his views on abortion and gay civil unions and so on down the throats of conservative voters who don't want that.

He's running on low taxes and what he did in New York. I think there are two striking things about Rudy -- Rudy Giuliani that no other candidate can match -- one, it's the whole 9/11 thing, where he was in a crisis and we saw how he performed. He performed extremely well. And secondly, it's New York City when he was mayor. You know, you can go to New York City and feel and see the difference that he made in that city as mayor. And I don't think you can say that about any mayor in any other city in the country.

HUME: And maybe not about many governors.

Barnes has got it right! With Rudy, its called honesty. With Rudy - what you see is what you get!

I think the biggest obstacle to Rudy's campaign is the huge impact the next POTUS will likely have on the Supreme Court. If it wasn't for that, I think you could make a strong case that Rudy's liberal views on social issues could be sufficiently countered by conservatives in Congress.

Did you see Rudy's latest comments on the type of justices he would appoint. All are strict constructionist..the kind who will NOT interfere with the WoT, and will vote to toss out Roe...

FYI..I pinged areafiftyone, hoping she can give you a link to his comments...tex and video..

I kind of like the Rudy thing. Time enough still to wonder who the First Lady would be.

Like any Pol does. Come on!

"If he makes the case, fine, if not, then you're free to sit out the campaign."

Who said anything about *sitting out*? I'll be voting for Duncan Hunter, if provided the chance. He doesn't have to convince me he's a CONSERVATIVE.

With the exception of War on Terror, there is not much difference between the two if you ask me. Your kids could be in trouble either way...

High praise indeed, when it comes from Bud Tyrrell, Jr. :) Nobody, and I mean nobody, can question the Conservative credentials of Tyrrell. It was The American Spectator, lead by Tyrrell, that began the movement which held Bill Clinton's feet to the fire for 8 years. To say nothing of the brilliance of the Conservative-minded writings that are published in TAS, and have been for many years, since before there was FR or Lucianne.com, etc. You can take Tyrrell's opinion to the bank.

OK..sorry for the presumption on my part..I misspoke. It wasn't my intent. Hunter is a wonderful candidate. I'd happily support him. My assessment is that he can't attract enough support, and $$$ to be a viable candidate. I'd love to see him on Rudy's short list for VP..which I suspect may well be the reason he's running. But if Rudy does prevail, and as I predict, it'll be down to he and McCain in a few months..then will you sit out, or what? That's the point I was trying to make, the question I was posing..
