"Well, one knows a politician by the company he keeps, and Mr. Giuliani has around him the financial people who created the libertarian-conservative Manhattan Institute. He relied heavily on the institute's policies while governing New York. He will rely on libertarian-conservative policy makers in his race for the White House and once there.
One also knows a political leader by the action he takes. As mayor, Mr. Giuliani took on the nanny state that city government had become, reducing the dependency that had one in seven New Yorkers living off government support. As for New York's huge welfare rolls, he more than halved them and had more than 100,000 welfare recipients finding work annually by 1999. He cleaned up the crime-ridden streets, cutting crime by 64% and murder by 67%. By cutting spending and taxes, he turned an economic basket case into an economic marvel. In eight years he reduced or extinguished 23 taxes. Every year he was in office, New York City's economy grew faster than the nation's.
That was then, this is now. Social, religious and gun-owning conservatives are not going to support Giuliani. They will not be persuaded to vote for a gun-grabbing abortionist, period.
((((PING))))
I kind of like the Rudy thing. Time enough still to wonder who the First Lady would be.
Boomp.
I can not trust anyone from NYC. They have a different view of what is good for the country than most of us in fly over country. As long as the Wall Street Crowd is making money and can can live in their guarded high rises and summer in the Hamptons they are happy NYC Republicans. Many of us see what they view as culture and the good life completely different. I have never met anyone from Rudiville that didn't think that the rest of the US were from Hicksville and needed changing to their way. For one I don't want to be changed for my own good. Just because he is the darling of Wall Street doesn't make him right for the country. Am I incorrect or have I noticed a hormonal influence in the support for Rudi.
I think it will be Giuliani vs. Hillary. Take your pick - the lesser of two evils. Again.
The most vocal FReepers these days are trashing the concerns of social conservatives in order to promote liberal/libertarian Giuliani. If he actually gets the GOP nomination, will you please start another forum so conservatives will have a place to talk about politics? Thanks.
I have always respected Emmett Tyrell's opinions.
The points he brings out about Rudy are formidable.
1. Taking on the Nanny State. As government grows and spends without restraint, this is an important quality to have in a leader.
2. Terrorism:
"He had already demonstrated his awareness of the danger and nihilism of terrorists. In 1995 he expelled Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat from commemorations of the United Nations' 50th anniversary sponsored by the city, saying, "When we're having a party and a celebration, I would rather not have someone who has been implicated in the murders of Americans there."
Mr. Giuliani's knowledge of international terrorism has steadily grown to the point that he is now acknowledged as one of the world's foremost authorities on terror. That alone in these times should commend him to the majority of the American electorate."
A great article well worth reading through.
