"...I was careful to note that though the movement embraces contending factions, they all come together at election time." That was then, this is now. Social, religious and gun-owning conservatives are not going to support Giuliani. They will not be persuaded to vote for a gun-grabbing abortionist, period.

That was then, this is now. Yep. We keep getting sold down the river, bit by bit. Just think, if WE conservatives, hadn't kicked up such a fuss about the Harriet Miers nomination - we might have had a different judge. We can't be cowed down - we have to make our voice heard. We can never afford to rest - because every time we do - they try to slip something in that is unacceptable to most conservatives.

I'm going to try something here..start a dialogue. You've said that you won't vote for Rudy, period. Your reasons why, ( abortion, guns, etc) I agree with your views on. I'm not going to cite statements Rudy has made of late, (for example to the effect that he is opposed to abortion, or on the type of judges he will appoint) rather, I'm going to ask you if you're willing to LISTEN to him as he tries to make the case that he merits your support and vote. That's all. No more, no less..If he makes the case, fine, if not, then you're free to sit out the campaign.
I believe that national security , the War in Terror, is the ONE overriding issue of the 2008 campaign, and that Rudy is the ONLY Republican who gets it, and has a good chance of being elected. That's my reason for supporting him.
We here accuse the left, correctly, of having a "closed mind." Are we to have the same charge made against us?

They will not be persuaded to vote for a gun-grabbing abortionist, period. Not all Republican voters are social conservatives, particularly outside of the South. In the Northeast and West Coast and Upper Midwest, social conservatism is not popular, especially now. And even in the South, there are social conservatives who will vote for Giuliani over the 'rat nominee. The Citadel did not invite Giuliani because nobody in SC supports him.
The real problem for social conservatives is that their best candidate cannot and will not run (Jeb Bush), and the other options are a bunch of mini-mees. Duncan Hunter is a nationally unknown Congresscritter who was never in the leadership. Republicans do not nominate unknowns.
It will take more than opposing Rudy to beat him in the primaries. You need a genuine alternative. Right now, there isn't one.

As a social, religious and gun-owning conservative myself, there is not an alternative at this point that can beat Hillary. What do you think is going to happen with those issues if she's elected? I'm supporting Rudy! I shudder to think what would happen to this country if she manages to win the election.

I know I won't be. And I'm a moderate in my circles. The otherwise reliably conservative Republican voters that I know simply won't support Rudy in a primary or a general election.
Which is why his nomination would be a disaster for the GOP.
But hey, they don't call them the "Stupid Party" for nothing...
