North Korea invaded South Korea...not the US.
I wonder if Hitler ever wished he could take that back? The Japanese attacked us without telling him. As a result the Russians were able to bring reinforcements from the Far East to reinforce troops defending Moscow. Without them, Moscow--and Leningrad --probably would have falled to the Germans.
Too many people insist on looking at the war in Iraq as if it were the only war we've ever fought.

1. He isn't downplaying, he's pointing out that the hysteria is unjustified.
2. You won't hear anyone saying it's not a lot of Americans? Tough.
The roughly 4 year total of men lost in Iraq is....
... still smaller than the death toll from the battle of the Kasserine Pass in WWII--6 days, 6,000 men.
... still smaller than the single day total from the Battle of Antietam in the Civil War--3,654 men.
...still less than twice the number lost by the Union at Cold Harbor.
...1/136 of the number of men we lost in WWII.
...is about 3,600 less than the number of men lost on Guadalcanal.
...far less than half the number we lost at Iwo Jima.
...less than a third the number of men lost at Okinawa.
...is less than the number of sailors alone who were killed at Okinawa in Kamikaze attacks.
Were all of those lost in Iraq valuable? Was their sacrifice meaningful? Are their families devastated? Yes to all those questions, but the same can be said of every American fighting man we've lost. Therefore, 3,000 is not a lot of Americans lost in a noble cause by any measure.
I will be called callous for saying that, but it's the truth, and it's time for Americans to man up and get this job done, or those 3,000 lives were poured down a hole.

It all gets back to the Rules of Engagement.
We are at War with Iran because they have declared War against us and have prosecuted War against us since 1979
until the present time.
It is a Cowardly Congress that refuses to recognize that War exists and declare War against Iran.
This is not the same as being unilateral. It is setting the US on a War basis and recognizing the situation as it has existed since 1979.
This is the starting point for the resolution of conflict which means Peace. Only when War is successfully waged can the Peace process begin. We must do so forthwith with Iran.
Then the muslims can pronounce salam (or whatever).

Being concerned about 3000 deaths isn't "hysteria," . 3000 died on 9-11, and the c oncern about those deaths isn't "hysteria."
I'll give you a heck yeah, but there are far more compelling reasons for why we went into Iraq than those you state.

Here is my understanding of Antietam (and all this in about four hours not four years):
More men were killed or wounded at Antietam on September 17, 1862, than on any other single day of the Civil War. Federal losses were 12,410, Confederate losses 10,700. Although neither side gained a decisive victory, Lee's failure to carry the war effort effectively into the North caused Great Britain to postpone recognition of the Confederate government. The battle also gave President Abraham Lincoln the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which, on January 1, 1863, declared free all slaves in States still in rebellion against the United States. Now the war had a dual purpose: to preserve the Union and end slavery.

I wished I did, but I didn't write this. I did post it.
I do agree that that are better reasons to go to Iraq, but I think the point here is these are good reason to really think about how 'bad' this war is going.

It's a different case, with the men and women who are fighting in Iraq. They opted to be in the military.
I have no quarrel with the info and, in fact, thank you for posting it. My comment about better reasons should not be taken as criticism. Sorry if it came across that way.
