KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A Big Island genealogist has discovered presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama has some ancestral ties to the White House and colonial Virginia. Bruce Harrison, founder of the Waikoloa-based Family Forest Project, says he found links between the Democratic senator from Illinois and Presidents George Washington, James Madison, Harry Truman and Jimmy Carter.

NOte that if Obama is serioous about this, it does not portend well that he puts genetic enheritance over learning. Remember that the pursuit of happiness in 1776 meant that one could aspire to be of any profession, and Americans would not "keep their palce and social staion" as prescribed by the semi caste approach of British society. "Obama, I knew George Washington, and YOU are no George Washington!"

Most of the genealogies that manage to link anybody to George Washington and other Famous Families of Virginia neglect a very important fact ~ it's called Bacon's Rebellion.

As part of the deal for settling issues leftover from the Rebellion, all but about 4% of Virginia residents at the time (circa 1676) changed their surnames. That way they could not be held accountable for acts charged to anyone with their former name ~ such was the state of the law in those days.

I've noticed that ALL the George Washington genealogies ignore this facet of his family's life in the New World.

I hope Obama isn't looking to capitalize on a connection with the Washington family. George Washington is being obliterated from the US education system.

But last month the faculty and parents of Washington Elementary School decided to change the name to Charles Richard Drew Elementary. The decision stemmed from a 1992 Orleans Powers School Board policy, which calls for renaming schools named for former slave owners or others who did not respect equal opportunity for all.

Source please ... and I don't see how that would have any effect on the construction of geneologies linking somebody to George Washington.
