No commercial that appeared last night during Super Bowl XLI directly addressed Iraq, unlike a patriotic spot for Budweiser beer that ran during the game two years ago. But the ongoing war seemed to linger just below the surface of many of this years commercials.
More than a dozen spots celebrated violence in an exaggerated, cartoonlike vein that was intended to be humorous, but often came across as cruel or callous.

My husband and I both thought most of the ads were in poor taste and were indeed violent. Fortunately, there were exceptions. We LOVED the blockbuster ad with the mouse. We laughed ourselves silly and talked about using our mouse at work today as we left the house, again laughing. Other honorable mentions that I can remember: Sprint (connectile dysfunction) and Justin Timberlake (who knew he had a sense of humor).

Violent ground acquisition games such as football is in fact a crypto-fascist metaphor for nuclear war. - Derek in Back to School.
It is impossible to satirize the New York Times. They are so far out of the realm of reality and common sense that they are beyond satire into farce.

The NYTimes is a propaganda source. It chose sides, prints accordingly, and shows no remorse for their chosen path.

Gee, what a shock. This pantywaist douche admits that he is a "someone who has watched the Super Bowl XIX years in a row only for the commercials."
The problem with the spot was that whenever the announcer said, a rock invoking the Prudential logo, the rock of Gibraltar it sounded as if he were saying, yes, Iraq.
I can relate. Whenever people say ridiculously pompous obsessive handwringers it sounds eerily like New York Times typists to my ears.

This is a grand example of how group psychosis is affecting rationality.

In the US, yes.
We all know of worse. Hatred and conceit are connected, and they bring terrible acts when power is added.

Agree, the Snickers ad should have been two women. And it should have had whipped cream on it.

You could have written this same article about any group of super bowl commercials in any of the last 20 years.

I don't understand...I thought that the average American wasn't thinking enough about the war, and just going on with everyday life, like it wasn't happening? Now that we have commercials with these undertones, why are people upset?

From the article about another commercial:
The problem with the spot, created internally at Prudential, was that whenever the announcer said, a rock invoking the Prudential logo, the rock of Gibraltar it sounded as if he were saying, yes, Iraq. I got Iraq!

Robert Goulet was clearly crawling on the ceiling because of the Iraq situation.
I don't know why everyone is being so cynical about this article.
I mean, IT'S OBVIOUS.
