How to Fix your computer to change for the NEW daylight savings times.(Even windows 98)
2/1/07 | Various and myself

Posted on 02/01/2007 7:50:25 PM PST by Revel

As some people know- the times for Daylight savings time changes have been moved to different dates. This means that If you have versions of windows that are no longer supported by Microsoft then the word is that Microsoft will not release any patch to allow your computer to change to or from daylight savings time on the proper day. Your computer will try to do that on the wrong days. Here is an article about it:

Clocks' Early Spring Forward May Bring About a Few Falls http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/31/AR2007013102318.html?nav=rss_print/asection

I went looking for a 2nd party patch for this and did not find one. What I did find is that Microsoft already has a program that will allow you to make these changes yourself. It is called tzedit.exe

There also appears to be a seperate version of tzedit for each version of windows. I am concentrating on windows 98. For other versions of windows then read this(Windows 2000 works the same way):

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21253837

There is a link to get the windows 98 version here along with some information(Get it now before Microsoft crys foul) If someone has a link to it directly at Microsoft then that would be good. But I could not find it, and it is probably not there any longer It would be part of a windows 98 devolpment kit.

****Use this program, and follow these directions at your own risk. I see no reason for you to have any problems. but I will not be responsible if you do. Nor will Free Republic. Any smart techs out there are welcome to chime in on there feelings about this.*******

Get the program for window98(or 95) Here: http://www.softshape.com/cham/manual/tzedit.htm

Just download it and unzip it anywhere regardless of what they say above as a "Suggested" location. Then double click on "tzedit.exe" to run it.

A simple dialog box comes up where you can make easy changes. *Select your time zone(It might be selected by default). *Click Edit

****Warning- Do not change anything except the starting and ending dates for daylight savings time.

*Change the start day to "Second" "Sunday" of "March" *Change the last day to "First" "Sunday" of "November" *Then click "ok" *Click on "Close"

And that is it. The changes have been made, and your computer should now change to and from daylight savings time on the proper days.

I get the new time changing dates from here: http://www.timetemperature.com/tzus/daylight_saving_time_extended.shtml

I hope this helps.

And your training experience is what?

What I speak of comes from over 28 years of training experience. Most computer owners only know how to turn on their computers and check e-mail, after that it is guess work at best. They may be proficient in Word or Excel … but to do anything else is beyond their comprehension. Why should they learn anything else, they have a competent group of computer specialist available if they get into trouble or have questions.

To ask them to remember a procedure that only happens once a year or so … give me a break!

Click on the clock and reset the time. Everyone with a computer has done it at some point. Takes about 15 or 20 seconds to reset the time forward an hour. And you expect people to download and install a windows fix? No, you give me a break.... You're crazy!

Perhaps you are forgetting something? Folks following your suggestion will be disappointed when the computer automatically changes the time again using the old DST schedule.

So, as long as you're making the manual change, click on the Time Zone tab and uncheck the box at the bottom of the window. And don't forget to click the Apply button when you're done.

So that is the one for NT?

They are all different. The one for windows 2000 will not work for windows 98 for example. I Tried it. It won't even open.

There is also another step according to what I just read. Well here is the whole thing with the additional steps at the end. They apply to windows 2000 at least. You need to change the time zone away from your time zone and then back to it...In order for the changes to take effect or work properly.

Using the tzedit.exe tool from Microsoft.

Download the tzedit.exe tool

Unzip the files into a Windows program directory such as c:\Program Files\TZEdit

Apply the tzedit.exe process to your systems:

1. Exit out of applications.
2. Run the executable tzedit.exe
3. Your current time zone should be highlighted. Click the Edit button.
4. Set Start Day to Second Sunday, March.
5. Set Last Day to First Sunday, November.
6. Click OK.
7. Click Close.

You need to change your time zone twice using the Windows Date and Time Control Panel.

1. From the Start menu, click Settings > Control Panel and then click Date and Time.
2. Click the Time Zone tab.
3. Select a different time zone and click Apply.
4. Now, select your time zone and click Apply, then click OK.
5. Restart your applications.

The extra hour of sunlight burns up the crops.

Make-believe time is the ultimate abomination. It tells government that we poor plebes can't even decide what time it is without their help.

"Perhaps you are forgetting something? Folks following your suggestion will be disappointed when the computer automatically changes the time again using the old DST schedule."

Not really... just change it! So what if you set it twice? It takes maybe 20 seconds. Considering all the clocks you have to manually change in the house and cars, another 20 seconds is nothing. However, if you prefer to spend many minutes uploading and installing some fix, be my guest.

All time is make believe. It's a totally arbitrary measurement system. Daylight savings or not, let's just keep it one or the other year round.

"Why all the effort when you can just change the time manually?"

Because Bill Gates will attempt to change it on the old dates, anyway.
