Political analyst says [Duncan] Hunter can move into GOP top tier

Political analyst and former Democrat insider Keith Thompson says even though Duncan Hunter is considered a long-shot for the White House, the California congressman could move into the top tier of GOP hopefuls as the 2008 presidential campaign progresses.

Hunter officially entered the 2008 presidential "sweepstakes" last week, Thompson notes. He says the candidate, as the former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has a strong conservative voting record working in his favor; and he is particularly known for his support of the military and his opposition to illegal immigration.

For these reasons, Thompson feels the California representative is at the top of the second tier of Republican hopefuls right now and is capable of moving up. Hunter has "a fairly decent financial base right now [and] some key supporters who are helping him get his campaign to the next level," the political analyst points out; "so I think he could come right into that first tier very quickly and be a significant candidate for the nomination."

Hunter's biggest problem is name recognition, Thompson acknowledges. He says that is one advantage early GOP favorites John McCain and Rudy Giuliani have over the California lawmaker.

But even though Hunter does not come in with the years of exposure that those virtually "mythological figures" have, Thompson observes, he says "the name recognition factor could change," and Hunter could become a force to be reckoned with in the coming 2008 presidential campaign.

More good news on Hunter. The lefties apparently already know that Hunter is a contender and they're worried about him. It's some of the folks on our side who need convincing...

You do realize that this will greatly upset the rudynazis, right?

What, all 5 of them?

What's particularly heartening is that it seems that Hunter's got a good financial base to work from. Of course, contributions from average Joe's like you and me can only help on that front. The Rudy McRomney supporters have deep pockets and all the free press coverage they could want--until the general election, that is.

More likely they are setting us up to run one of our weaker candidates against Hillary or Obama. They know neither cant beat McCain or Giuliani and the more people see and hear Hillary, the less they will like her.

It's kind of like Brayer Rabbit(sp), saying whatever you do, please dont throw me in that briar patch. In this case the Dems are saying oh please whatever you do, dont nominate Duncan Hunter. Oh Please!!

Oh please. Most of the savvy liberals I've spoken to think that the only chance Hillary has is against Rudy. Pretty much anyone else would clean her clock.

It's kind of like Brayer Rabbit(sp), saying whatever you do, please dont throw me in that briar patch. In this case the Dems are saying oh please whatever you do, dont nominate Duncan Hunter.

Only that's not what they're saying. For example, Wonkette took the opposite tack--saying, "I hope they nominate Hunter." So the Br'er Rabbit thing doesn't wash. They're trying to tar Hunter as an "extremist"--which is what they do with anyone who's even marginally conservative.

That they're even paying Hunter any mind at all is an EXCELLENT sign. They're scared.

And don't think we aren't a bellweather for conservative opinion....

People are watching us. Which is why the Rudy McRomney people are starting to freak out.

I read a news piece yesterday on the weak Republican field. They mentioned all the front runners and then Huckabee and Hagel but didnt give one word to Duncan Hunter. Guess that shows how much they expect that baloon to rise. Pop!!

Amongst the conservatives. The dem operative plants still fight tooth & nail for him, and get really unhinged when you use facts and history to accurately portray him. they call using fats and history 'bashing'. Why, heck, if it really is bashing, rudy has only done it to himself.

Hunter is the real deal. they hate that, because they are not conservaives.

What, all 5 of them?

Well, not five, but certainly not as many as they would claim...

If the short list for Republican Nominee were narrowed down to the following, which one would you favor?

Duncan Hunter 26.5%

Newt Gingrich 25.7%

Rudy Giuliani 13.8%

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Jim Gilmore (former VA Gov) added to the options, but these three are definitely in the correct order, IMHO.

Illogical.

If they know he has zero chance, as you keep braying at us, they would not be saying oh please don't nominate him in hopes we would nominate him. Get it? They already know he has zero chance. End of story for them.

They would be doing nothing at all to try tricking us into nominating someone they know has no chance to be nominated. This gets so wearying. Over and over and over. They say repetition works, though.

But I wonder...

Hunter was on Steffie's This Week program.

Immediately after the Hunter segment ended, Steffie turned to talk to his panel. His first statement to the panel was:

Steppie on Duncan Hunter: "I don't think he has a chance....longest of the long shots."

===

Hunter seems the best of the lot so far. I hope he makes Steffie eat his words.

Name recognition doesn't always work in one's favor, you know.
