The Marine Corps said Monday that it has ordered a probe into how a government report on the killings of Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha was leaked to the news media.
Lt. Gen. James Mattis, the top general at Camp Pendleton, ordered the investigation after several defense attorneys complained that sensitive information about their clients had been leaked, Marine spokesman Lt. Col. Sean Gibson said.
The Washington Post published photos and eyewitness accounts Jan 6 from the military's investigative file that had not been made public. One photo showed five Iraqis who had been shot dead near a taxi.
Four enlisted Camp Pendleton Marines were charged Dec. 21 with unpremeditated murder and four officers were charged with failing to properly report the killings.
Jack Zimmerman, attorney for Lance Cpl. Stephen Tatum, said Mattis ordered the investigation Jan. 23.
"I was very pleased that he shared our thought that the investigation should never be released," said Zimmerman.
The killings are the biggest U.S. criminal case involving civilian deaths to come out of the Iraq war. A total of 24 Iraqis - including women and children - were killed by Marines on Nov. 19, 2005.
Marine lawyers have said the troops were responding with legitimate force after a roadside bomb killed one of their squad.

The first person the investigator should go to is Murtha, he knows who some of the leakers are.
If you would like to help with the civilian lawyers legal fees for the
Haditha Marines you can do so by going to these sites.

I would worry if I were Zimmerman, the defense lawyer.
This could be the brass's way of covering up Murtha's command influence.
The Defense Attorney needs to demand outside consultants representing the defense be part of this "investigation."
If there WERE command influence by Murtha, then, As it now stands, the "system" is on the side of the prosecutor. Due diligence would demand the defense be totally involved in any so-called investigation.

"The killings are the biggest U.S. criminal case involving civilian deaths to come out of the Iraq war. A total of 24 Iraqis - including women and children - were killed by Marines on Nov. 19, 2005." No "alleged" killings," no "alleged" civilians, no "apparently," as would be the normal practice. Just the AP's special way to spit on Marines (and soldiers). Why have a trial when the AP already has the verdict?

Everyone's so tough on lawyers and JAGS (including me) that I have to give a guy like Jack Zimmermann his due. (His name is spelled with two n's, BTW, it's wrong in the article).
Mr. Zimmermann served 14 years on active duty in the Marine Corps, including duty as the commanding officer of two artillery batteries in combat, where he earned two Bronze Star medals for heroism and the Purple Heart for wounds in action.
He served for 16 years as an officer in the Marine Corps Reserve, including duty as the commanding officer of the infantry battalion headquartered in Houston.
He retired in 1994 as a colonel, and was presented the Meritorious Service Medal for his final assignment as a felony court-martial judge.
He is representing Lance Cpl. Jack B. Tatum of Oklahoma in this case. If any Oklahoma Freepers want to pitch in and help a native son, please see my homepage.

General Mattis of course did the right thing. About time someone has put their foot down on damn leakers.

I just re-read the article and noticed it's mighty slim on specifics.
Just who is going to investigate the leaks? The NCIS?
