Hug a tree, kill a baby. The new GOP "moderates".

I am a conservative but also a conservationist. We have cut down 95% of the old growth redwoods. The remaining giants are a national treasure. I say save them at all costs.

I believe we should be in control of our environment, but a tree isn't more valuable than unborn children. Governor Schwarzenegger, Rudy Giuliani and others need to honor the rights of all life, not just the trees and whales.

Can you cite your source for that statistic of 95% of the old growth redwoods are now gone? The last time I was in Redwood Country, there was much more there than I would have expected, if I had believed the news media and Al Gore.

Good for you - since the company is broke, I am sure they will sell you their land and trees.

Write them a check out of your personal account, and you have saved the world.

If you are a conservative and want to "save them at all costs" you should BUY them.

If your "at all costs" means someone else's money you are a liberal, not a conservative.

B.S.

All these hyperbolic claims about how few old-growth redwoods are left are based on the numbers of old-growth redwoods left on private property.

Huge amounts of old-growth redwoods are preserved in Redwood National Park. Of course there are few old-growth redwoods left in private hands, because the government has taken most of them.

People used to be able to earn a decent living in Humboldt County, but now all that's left are low-paying tourism jobs and high-paying government jobs.

IF... what you say is even the slightest bit true... the remaining 5% will eventually die, fall over and rot, supply a wealth of bug-bait to infect the rest of the forest ANYWAY!!!

What is wrong with you? Were talking about something here that gets born, lives a long life, then dies off EVEN IF NEVER HARVESTED for the benefit of all mankind for which it was created by God in the first place!!!

We have his WORD on it!!!

Yep--and many were dead. More than 95% of elderly people have died in the last 500 years. That's life.

The remaining giants are a national treasure. I say save them at all costs.

There are forests upon forests in the hands of Government worldwide. How do you define "all costs"? Who do you propose bear these "costs"? The oceans are also a national treasure. Should we not build near beaches, either? What part of the beautiful planet should people be able to use, in your "conservative" way of thinking?

Do you also favor dropping that pesky little phrase from the 5th Amendment ("or property")?

I'm sorry, but this sounds like the kind of glib, arbitary statistic that environmentalist freaks delight to make up out of thin air or that they concoct by manipulating and stretching the data to preposterous lengths. Nobody ever challenges it so it becomes the "truth" by mindless repetition.

So why can't they harvest trees that are blown down?? Why do we have to let burned forests rot.

There is such a thing as Forest Management which the Enviroterrorists will not allow.

How do you know this is not second growth forest? Seems this is another Spotted Owl boondoggle to protect habitat. If the lieyers want to make laws that strangle mills than they should be ready to pony up when mills file bankruptcy.

Not only save them, but create a workforce of tree planters to that in 200-400 years there will be a new and vibrant forest.

this is a Charles Hurowitz company and he specializes in buying up companies and destroying them for personal gain....he did it to Kaiser Aluminum and thousands lost their hard earned pensions and any medical retirement that they were owed, promised, etc......

he declared bankruptcy and ditched the taxpayers with a huge pension liability...and even though its still a pension paid for by taxpayers, its a pittance what was owed them...

I happen to know that after Hurowitz dumped one particular plant, that plant gave up minimumly $30,000,000 dollars in scrap metal ALONE to the new owners...........

just because someone throws around the "regulations" mantra, it does not mean that THAT is the real reason the said company is going bankrupt.....Hurowitz has bankrupt companies before blaming everything and everyone from "regulations" to "unions" to energy costs to which way the wind blows....

but in reality, he robs companies by putting them in debt then escapes with his millions......

I agree with you completely. To cede the environmental protection issue to the liberals is the maddest of follies.
