Diverse Voices To Denounce Iraq Troop Plan [Hanoi Jane's war protest] [FR DC Chapter opposes]
Washington Post ^ | January 27, 2007 | By Michael E. Ruane

Tens of thousands of demonstrators from across the country are expected to converge in Washington today to urge the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq as President Bush is proposing to send more troops in an effort to stabilize the country.

They plan to rally on the Mall, march around the north side of the Capitol and send a strong message to the government.

The event, which authorities said could draw 100,000 people, starts with a rally at 11 a.m. Among those expected to address the crowd are Jane Fonda, Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon and Jesse Jackson.

The march, organized by the group United for Peace and Justice, is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

~~snip~~

Fifty to 100 members of the Washington chapter of the conservative organization FreeRepublic.com plan to rally near the U.S. Navy Memorial to oppose the march and the participation of Jane Fonda, the chapter said. The actress has long been the object of conservative ire for her support of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

"These groups are the ones that are acting as the political arm of the terrorists overseas to help bring about America's defeat in the war on terror," said Kristinn Taylor of FreeRepublic.com.

If you see Maw Sheehan throw a pie in her face.

I think she will be with Code Pink in Austin next weekend and stage a protest along Loop 1 (MOPAC) and the entrance to our National Guard HQ. I know the Code Pink crowd will be there. We got an email Thursday telling us to not confront them from inside the fence. Wanna bet?

Jim,

This certainly puts the lie to Hanoi Jane's 'apology' for her Vietnam antics, doesn't it?

Taking a line and a concept from the Bible, she's like a dog returning to its vomit.

Danny Glover and Susan Sarandon are in a showbiz bubble so they probably don't think they're risking their careers. I would never buy their DVDs.

Remember while you guys are out to spread the word about the Pledge.

The Pledge will keep running throughout the weekend, its signers continuing to try and get through to Republican Senate leadership with the message that now is the time to refuse to go along to get along with Senate Democrats. Now is the time to support the troops and thus to refuse cloture on the Biden resolution.

Please sign, and then take a look at the full blogroll, and then the state map.  Then make an effort to contact the key GOP senators, starting with Senator McConnell and Senator McCain.

Hat tip

A large chunk of the "protesters" will be students, and there are more than 100,000 of them within 15 miles of the Mall.

George Washington University 24,000
Howard University 11,000
Georgetown University 14,000
American University 11,000
Catholic University of America 6,000
University of Maryland, College Park 35,000

Those fighting against them need to be dealt with. Harshly.

I agree. I would love to drive a Vermont Liquid manure speader down the street and spray them with 100, 000 gallons of Vermont's finest liquid cow dung. After that I would dismount my spreader with tire wood in hand, and lay about me with wreckless abandon.

I'm thinking of getting some skunk smell and spraying the grass along the road.

Oh wait, they already smell worse than that. Maybe some buck attractant...

Cynthia O. Smith, a Defense Department spokeswoman, said members of the Armed Forces can speak out, subject to several restrictions. They must not do so in uniform, and they must make clear that they do not speak on behalf of their military unit, their service or the Defense Department, unless authorized to do so, she said.
