CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - An admissions department e-mail sent from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill congratulated 2,700 prospective freshmen this week on their acceptance to the school.
The problem is that none of the students have been admitted. They are on the school's wait list and won't find out until March whether they've made the cut.
"We deeply regret this disappointment, which we know is compounded by the stress and anxiety that students experience as a result of the admissions process," Stephen Farmer, the school's director of undergraduate admissions, said in a news release.
Farmer said two employees accidentally sent the e-mail Tuesday. It began, "Congratulations again on your admission to the University."
The e-mail was intended to request midyear grades from high school students who have already been accepted to the school.
Admissions officials have sent follow-up e-mails apologizing for the error. They have also e-mailed admissions counselors around the nation to explain the mistake.
About 20,000 people apply each year to UNC Chapel Hill, and the school enrolls about 3,800 new freshmen.
Well it could have been worse. They could have been told that they'd been accepted at Duke.
UNC Ping
They can always try Duke........
North Dakota?? (see topic)
The keepers of the key to the NC Ping List may wish to notify the usual suspects.
Something tells me the incoming freshman class at UNC WILL have 2,700 more folks than originally planned...
Geeze. That doesn't say much for the reading comprehension skills of UNC grads, does it? I'll see if one of the mods can correct it to North Carolina.
Doesn't matter one whit. The school could retroactively tighten its academic requirements, and weed 2700 students (not necessarily the same ones) out with poor grades. And there's nothing they could do about it.
The yield on students on a wait list would be very high, because UNC is probably the best school they could get into. So, if UNC were to be forced to take these students, they had best be ordering trailers.
This was apparently a computer screw-up. Those darn computers...
I don't think that UNC can afford to fight and/or settle that many lawsuits...regardless of whether the lawsuits have merit or not.
Probably a lot cheaper than fighting and/or settling the lawsuits that will come their way.
So it IS Algore's fault!
Thailand??
Unfortunately, my list is out of date. Alia, CD or Howlin will have to do it when they come back on.
:(
1. You were admitted by mistake.
2. The University will honor your admission if you choose to enroll.
3. Your high school record and test scores suggest that you are unlikely to be successful at the University of California.
4. If you choose not to enroll, we have made arrangements with several of the California State College campuses to accept your late application and to admit you on the basis of the application you submitted to UC.
Seemed pretty fair resolution to me. My friend went to Davis, had a really rough time, and ended up dropping out, and later finishing up at a State College. But, I give the University credit for standing behind it's mistake, but being honest that the student might not find UC the best fit, and offering an appropriate alternative.
That said, I do not wish any of my children to attend any school in the UNC system. I thought that the school was whacked out leftist when I was there. If UNC went back to that I might reconsider. As it is now, no way. I refuse to pour my money down a liberal rat hole.

The matriculation rate is 56% at UNCCH.
Unfortunately, regular admission applications have probably not been processed. These notified students were intended to be rolled over into the regular admission pool out of the early admission pool. (Guessing)
If that's the case, the injured parties will be those applying for regular admission. People only get pulled out of the wait group if there is a deficit of qualified applicants taking the regular admission route.
