MLK Party Causes Uproar on Texas Campus Email this Story

By JEFF CARLTON

DALLAS (AP) - Authorities at Tarleton State University said they plan to investigate a Martin Luther King Jr. Day party that mocked black stereotypes by featuring fried chicken, malt liquor and faux gang apparel.

"I feel like there is no excuse for this type of ignorance," said Donald Ray Elder, president of the Stephenville school's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Photographs posted on social networking Web site Facebook.com showed partygoers wearing Afro wigs and fake gold and silver teeth. One photo showed students "mocking how African-Americans do step shows," Elder said. In another picture, a student is dressed as Aunt Jemima and carries a gun.

"That upsets me," Elder said. "That's someone who knows nothing about Dr. King, because Dr. King was totally about nonviolence."

Wanda Mercer, the school's vice president of student life, said an investigation was planned into the Jan. 15 party.

More than 400 students attended a university-sponsored forum Wednesday night that Elder described as "a shaky baby step" in bridging a divide between black and white students on the campus, which had about 400 black students out of 7,800 overall last semester.

Elder said he sensed a racial divide at the forum, with black students sitting on one side of the room and whites on the other.

"It was civil, but it also escalated into a shouting match," he said in a telephone interview afterward.

Some of the students shown in the photos apologized, Elder said.

University President Dennis P. McCabe said the photographs were reprehensible.

"I am personally insulted by these photographs and am disappointed that Tarleton students have demonstrated such insensitivity," he said.

Stephenville is about 60 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

King was a plagerist.

He had a lot of failings, as we all do. But at least he thought you should judge a man on the convictions of his heart, and not the color of his skin. The so-called "black leaders" of today think that the only thing that matters is the color of your skin, and you should get a big check from Uncle Sam because of it.

Rythem and Blues, Rock, Jazz, education, and a hundred different inventions were the legacy of the Black culture of a hundred years ago. The legacy of today's Black culture is welfare mothers, absent dads, Rap, Hip-Hop, gunfights, race lawyers, and standing with a hand out. All the people we learn about in Black History Month would be shunned by most inner-city Blacks of today because they were "too white".

Yeah, tell that to the business owners on Hough Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio back in 1966.

I can't say that MLK professed violence, but the movement that seemed to spark from his presence was certainly violent. Very violent.

As for the party, I really don't see the problem - the objections are generally PC gone overboard.

You may mock Christ in art exhibits but do not dare blaspheme the deity of MLK.

I think Dr. King would be absolutely appalled by what the American black community has become.

If Martin Luther King was such a great guy, why is his criminal record sealed by the FBI for fifty years? This information comes from an hour long documentary that was on the History Channel. Another fact that the FBI uncovered is that MLK had a sexual preference for white women. I think it's interesting that the feminists as a group are willing to let these little facts slide.

"a student is dressed as Aunt Jemima and carries a gun"

Obviously, in today's politically-correct environment, humor is not allowed (unless it's a Bush-bash)

Although admittedly boorish and juvenile, there is nothing in the article to indicate the party took place on Campus or in any facility affiliated with the campus. Thus, there is nothing to "investigate" although University Officials have threatened to do so. Most of these students are adults so they have a right to have whatever kind of party they want as long as they don't break the law, in which csae it would be a police matter. (ie. underage drinking)

"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

It's in very bad taste but young kids/adults are always going to rebel against something thrown in their face time and time again (Black this, Hispanic that, white people are evil...).

I blame the PC culture. If I was 10 years younger I would probably get drunk act stupid and piss off Cultural Marxist at Universities.

Fried chicken?? There are three fried chicken franchises within 2 blocks of each other in our town. KY Fried, Popeye's and Church's. Go there any night and see what the customer base is. Then you can draw your own conclusions.

..someone who knows nothing about Dr. King..

I know something about Dr. King. The FBI wiretaps overhead him saying when asked if he needed anything, "Bring me a bottle of scotch and a white woman." It seems to me that Dr. King indeed liked to party..

The Left has used that type of imagery to ridicule Condi Rice and the black community has not responded with outrage at such depictions.

Instead we hear every stereotype in the book being used to slur black Republicans (Oreo cookie, Uncle Tom, house n-word,...).

Plus not one Basketball was in sight.

Hello. I would like to speak on a racial problem that I feel very deeply about.

I’m speaking, of course, about the horrible racial divide felt in the NFL. It is unconciounable and unfair that black players make up such a huge part of the NFL, simply because they are generally bigger, faster and stronger than the white players who try out for the league. That’s right…simply on the basis of their abilities, and the arrogant desire by the league owners to win games, a racial split is created in the sport that is simply unfair, resulting in a league that honestly doesn’t “look like America.”

That’s why I urge you to call your congresspeople and demand the passage of the “Completely Equal, Totally Fair, Absolutely Not Really A Racial Quota in Football Act” (CETFANARQIFA.) When passed, it will force, in a completely fair and equal way, the “Football Mafia” owner’s organization to hire enough untalented, under qualified, poorly playing white men to finally bring balance back into the game, and it will impose stiff tax penalties on the owners until the white population of the league finally comes into balance with the white majority numbers in outside society. Also, the owners will be forced into a massive recruitment campaign, which will ordain that they have to go to high-schools all over the U.S. and seek out non-sports-playing white freshmen in areas such as computer-programming, economics, and chess-playing, and encourage them with equally high-paying scholarships to enter into a sport that they are completely unqualified to be playing. Only then will things be utterly and finally fair in this country.

CETFANARQIFA: It’s more than just a stupid, outlandish, arrogant and pointless idea: it’s what your new Democratic masters think is best. Get used to it.

The behavior was probably boorish but there were both blacks and whites at this thing. If they had a party celebrating George Washington's birthday and blacks dressed up as colonial whites would that be considered boorish and racist? I guess you would need the new "Racial Divide Sensor" to be able to tell.

And do they honor his memory by following his example?

So, does the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People do ANYTHING to advance 'colored people' that doesn't include either whining about perceived mistreatment or getting other 'people' to pay for faux advancement?

Anything?
