Duncan admits to three more murders (Death penalty sought)
SpokesmanReview.com (WA) ^ | January 23, 2007 | Taryn Brodwater

Joseph Duncan has confessed to killing three children in Washington and California in 1996 and '97, according to federal court documents filed this morning.

The documents also reveal that Shasta Groene of Coeur d'Alene saw Duncan abuse and murder her 9-year-old brother, Dylan, in 2005. Federal prosecutors today filed the notice of intent to seek the death penalty for Dylan’s murder.

That Shasta witnessed her brother’s murder by torture, and Duncan’s confessions to the other killings, were listed as aggravating factors warranting the death penalty.

Duncan was charged in federal court last week for his crimes against the Groene children. The Riverside (Calif.) District Attorney’s Office also charged Duncan last week with the 1997 murder of 10-year-old Anthony Martinez.

Duncan has confessed to killing Martinez and to the murders of two Seattle-area girls, according to federal prosecutors. Sammiejo White, 11, and her sister, 9-year-old Carmen Cubias disappeared on July 6, 1996, after leaving a Bothell, Wash., motel.

With Tuesday’s filing, both federal prosecutors and Riverside authorities are seeking the death penalty for the convicted killer.

I've been following the case - it'd be tough to live in Idaho and not follow it - and everytime there's a twist in it the guy looks more completely evil. Given the circumstances of her brother's murder I begin to understand why the prosecutor didn't want her to have to testify.

It'd be an interesting study to find out what could turn a human being into something like Duncan. What a pity there are anti-vivisection laws...

Completely agree. This girl is going to have a hard enough time getting on with her life, she certainly shouldn't have to testify in a court if not absolutely necessary.

I've been following the case also, I guess this proves that some people are just plain evil.

I live in Idaho. The entire case started for me the day my cell phone went off giving me the amber alert. I live in Boise, an 8 hour drive from Coeur d'Alene but I still got the amber alert (think it went out state wide). My wife grew up in Coeur d'Alene though. We were up there last summer to visit her father in law.

As we were driving out to Cataldo to see the Old Mission we passed the house. It was still taped up with police tape. The house is literally a stone throw from the freeway. Not only is it that close, it is also pretty much the only house in that field between hills. Anyone driving by would have or could have seen things suspicious going on. The guy was casing the house and feeding the dog steak for weeks before.

Then of course that rat bastard shows up at Denny's(I think it was) in Coeur d'Alene with Shasta basically rubbing it in the public's face.

Idaho death penalty is leathal injection or firing squad. Both of em are too good for this cretin.

The plea bargain means that he won't be facing the death penalty in Idaho. He will be facing it in (I believe) Wyoming, Montana, and through the federal trials (crossed state lines in a kidnapping case). Pity, too - I was gonna sign up for the firing squad.

The kids' picture was all over the place - every gas station and restaurant I stopped at had a photocopy. Duncan is lucky the cops got to him before the locals did.

Did you happen to catch this character's blog before it was deleted? Horrifying, and even worse to contemplate that he'd already killed three kids when he was writing that it was all society's fault. I don't think we're going to hear a great deal of the argument that executing this guy is going to make us as bad as he is. That simply isn't possible.

Good, but not positive enough. How about "Vote Duncan Hunter for President, he hasn't murdered anyone that we know of." I like the flow...

This is the most horrendous crime by an individual that I have seen in my 11 years of law enforcement and I have seen a few.

The details are absolutely sickening and all we can do is pray for this young girl. Shasta and her father were both baptized recently and I hope our prayers, well wishes, family, and most of all God can bring peace to them.

How any person cannot support the death penalty for this vile creature (who videotaped himself doing sick things by the way) is beyond me.

Duncan Hunter hasn't resorted to killing anybody to get the MSM to notice him. And he's conservative.

Correct on all points.

Shasta and her father were both baptized recently and I hope our prayers, well wishes, family, and most of all God can bring peace to them.

Amen

The case of abducted Anthony knocked me for a loop -- I was a new mom, and I was devastated when he was found dead and in the state that he was. If this is the right guy, I hope the %$#@er fries for it.

I believe there was also a similar case in Colorado (Oregon?) a couple of years ago where the sketch seemed similar... (?)
