Sen. Saxby Chambliss for President? (Vanity)
22 Jan 2007 | Deaconjim

While viewing the news this morning and getting aggravated that there were so few real conservative candidates to choose from, I started running through my mind the list of real, credible conservatives on the political scene. Frankly, that was a short list.

One person that came to mind, however, was Sen. Saxby Chambliss. While I have been out of the political scene in Georgia for some time now, my recollection is that he was quite conservative, and he seems to get a great deal of respect from the press and from his collegues.

He and I have had our differences in the past, but they stemmed from internal party issues, not his job performance. Does anyone else here have an opinion either way?

I don't think it would be wise for Republicans to nominate a southerner in 2008.

Try former VA Gov. Jim Gilmore.

Saxby is a great guy but should run for governor of the Peach State before considering a run for POTUS.

I think it would be better to pay attention to things that matter rather than regional prejudices. If we can get a real, credible conservative who can speak, lead, and think, it wouldn't matter where he came from.

Focusing on non issues is a good way to lose elections.

They don't matter to most people.

I don't think so. I like Sen. Chambliss, smart guy, always had President Bush's back, but he seems a little too slick to me. Too much polished politician. I can't exactly put my finger on it.

He'd get my vote, but he doesn't have national name recognition, and being conservative, he'd get jack sh!t from the MSM

There are quite a few credible conservatives who can speak, lead and think but there isn't one out there right now that can win.

What has Chambliss DONE while in the Senate? Wouldn't Perdue be a better choice?

I agree that he would make a good choice for Governor, but frankly I think his talents would be wasted there. There are several good conservatives that could serve in that position, but the Presidential race is sadly lacking.

Saxby can't win now. Perhaps after being a successful governor he could.

I would love to see Sonny run, and he would absolutely get my vote, but so far he hasn't made any movement towards a run.

Being Governor isn't a prereq for bing President. If that were the case, Hillary, Edwards, Kerry, and Obama wouldn't be running.

Whatever his merits or lack of, is there a shred of evidence he has any desire to be President? You need a "fire in the belly" for the job in order to take the fire from the enemy, including from within your own party.

There's just one problem. A real, credible conservative ( as defined by most at FR) will not win the nomination.

Just like me...I'm a real, credible conservative (with libertarian leanings), and I won't win the nomination either, heh.

I never said it was a requirement, but it helps make hem ELECTIBLE.

The last time a Senator was elected POTUS was 1960. All but one of the men elected president since 1976 was a governor and the one was vice-president for 8 years.

None what-so-ever. This was nothing more than a mental exercise on my part. I haven't spoken with Saxby in the past 4 years, so I have no idea what he may have in mind. I've heard nothing from or about him on the subject.
