It's not so bad to be fat
10:00 20 January 2007
Obesity is a risk factor for heart disease, but if your heart is already failing, being fat could save your life.
Gregg Fonarow of the University of California, Los Angeles, and his colleagues looked at the records of more than 100,000 patients hospitalised because their heart failure was worsening. They found that the fatter the person, the less likely they were to die during a week-long hospital stay (American Heart Journal, vol 153, p 74).
Fonarow suggests that fat people may cope better with heart failure because they have more metabolic reserves to draw on when the heart isn't pumping blood fast enough to meet the body's needs.

If shipwrecked, they will starve last.
On the other hand, if the aliens from outer space invade, they will be the first ones eaten.
Oh, please. Now I've seen everything.
10 - 20 pounds overweight, I can buy. But NOT obese.
HA!
So now it's good to be fat, right? I guess it's just a matter of time now before we see the study that tells us that smoking prevents diabetes and drinking raises your IQ.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Three-thousand patients will participate in a study on whether exercise really is good for heart failure patients, doctors in North Carolina said.
While doctors have encouraged exercise for years, "exercise training has not been definitively established as safe in the group of patients who primarily have heart failure," Dalane W. Kitzman -- a cardiologist and principal investigator at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center -- wrote in the American Heart Journal.
"Controlled clinical trials have shown that exercise training improves physiological measurements" such as the distance that patients can walk in six minutes, Kitzman and his colleagues wrote. "None of these trials enrolled a sufficient number of patients to properly evaluate the impact of exercise training on death and hospitalization."
Patients from a wide demographic and socioeconomic population will participate in the study, which will be conducted from 84 study sites across North America and Europe, he said.
Not if aliens prefer their meat to be a little lean...
Well, I'm just waiting for the study that says I should lounge around all day, watch TV, eat plenty of bacon and chocolate, drink lots of beer, and avoid exercise.
Wait. I hate TV. But I could always read a book.
.... And fat people are actually sexier
You mean they don't? Darn....
I have both of the above, a bit of a heart problem, and a bit of a weight problem, and I'm not buying the study results.
I think it's simply that fat people get more serious about putting their bodies in order AFTER the attack.
Well, smoking helps some, but if you want guarantees you also have to drink a lot and take drugs. It can take up most of the day, I hear.
I have a new phrase sports announcers can use now...if a player makes a great play they can say "that was a rosie O'Donnell play - it was huge." LOL
For a man over 40 or 45 years of age and 30 pounds overweight, it begins to feel like death is approaching. And some die rather quickly after that.
ROTF!
Hey, I have that! I'll have to read it sometime.
