Rudy Giuliani is still the preferred presidential hopeful for Republican Party sympathizers in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 28 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 20 per cent, followed by former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with 14 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent.
Earlier this month, Gingrich questioned the GOP’s reliance on its conservative base, saying, "Ronald Reagan understood that arguments should be made where we have huge advantages with virtually all Americans. He was brilliant at avoiding base-narrowing appeals and emphasizing base-broadening appeals. A base-motivation party inherently, in the long run, drives away the non-base."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.

Too bad. The selection sucks. Newt is the only true conservative in the list. What a mess.
I posted this before, but my sentiments are the same:
Newt seems to have some mojo.
He's been polling second and third in many of the primary states recently, and is almost always within a few points of #1.
Here, he polls in third place NATIONALLY, just six points behind McCain and well within striking distance of Rudy.
Not bad for a guy who hasn't even declared yet.
I'm beginning to believe Newt Gingrich could win the nomination if he doesn't wait too long. I mean think about it: he's within striking distance without even declaring. Relatively speaking, he's bascially absent from the news; and the top two guys (Rudy and McCain) are in the news every day, more often than not with high laudits and adulations (Liberal Press loves them - possible exception of NY Times, which has permanent personal beef with Rudy).
With respect to solid Conservative and good guy Duncan Hunter, could Newt actually wind up being the guy from the right? He's Conservative enough for the SoCons, fiscally sound, and has an impressive Congressional record and record of winning. Sure, at the start there will be some to whom only one certain SoCon of their personal choice is at all acceptable and everyone else is a fraud, blah blah blah....But Newt seems like one possibility of a guy who could be at least acceptable to nearly all GOPers.
I don't know. Who knows if he'll even run. But from my observation, he looks to be in VERY good shape if he does.
And yes, despite what anyone wants to tell you, Newt can win. Anyone who thinks he can't better stop telling you to fear Hillary, as if she automatically can.

Unites both sides of the base, with a decent outreach to the undecideds and Moderates out there. It gives Rudy a chance to build some Conservative street cred for a future Presidential run, if he truly intends to convert. Lets us see how Rudy handles the fire at the national level, when he's a target and not just the adored "America's Mayor." Newt has been through every possible fire imaginable, and look at him rise.
Truly, I think Gingrich/Giuliani ("Two Gs - for Good Government!") would be a very formidable ticket, and one that brings back the currently divided factions of our party.
It's along way away for anyone to predict who'll win. But I hope it's Gingrich/Giuliani, especially if no other Conservative rises enough to challenge the three-headed monster in the primaries.

I truly believe Conservatives are being marginalized by RINOS, Country Club Republicans (e.g. so-called "moderates") and the MSM. I don't think we have even a snow-ball's chance in hell to effectively participate in the 2008 election.

Not unless we choose one conservative candidate now. If we divide the conservative support we won't even have a choice come primary time.
Come up with a powerhouse candidate and quit blaming others.

I'm not really blaming anyone. But I think we all should be fully aware that the mainstream GOP is distancing itself from Conservatives.
As far as viable (e.g., winnable) Conservative candidates go, those that have established national name recognition are extremely rare, with the exception of Gingrich, of course. The only people who would support Gingrich are staunch Conservatives---are there enough of us to even win the primary? I doubt it.
Conservatives are going to have a very tough fight if they wish to influence this election.
