WORRIED parents have blocked government plans to vaccinate girls as young as nine against a sexually-transmitted virus that can cause cervical cancer.
Health chiefs have abandoned proposals to offer the jab against human papilloma virus (HPV) to primary school children after parents complained that it was inappropriate for girls of such a young age.
Scotland on Sunday revealed last summer that ministers were considering offering the jab to children in a desperate attempt to stop the "epidemic" in cervical cancer. The proposals for a nationwide scheme followed successful trials of a new vaccine in Glasgow.
But ministers have now been forced to concentrate on plans for the treatment on girls of at least 12 - itself a hugely controversial move.
The government U-turn came after medical experts who make the final recommendations on the baseline defences against HPV were warned of parents' opposition. The experts also threw out proposals to vaccinate boys against HPV, despite evidence that they can transmit the virus through sexual contact.

dosent anyone know where their kids are in Scotland?????
HEY MOM AND DAD!!!
WAKE UP!
My MD talked to my fourteen year old about this the other day and she was so insulted.
It's nice to read about concerned parents every now and then. Most don't seem to give a damn what happens to their kids these days.
My daughter would not be given this shot, either.
Thankfully, if you raise your daughter with Conservative Values she will not have sex until she is married.
And children are already routinely given immunizations for other sexually transmitted diseases, most notably Hepatitis B.
"The experts also threw out proposals to vaccinate boys against HPV, despite evidence that they can transmit the virus through sexual contact."
I would imagine if HPV caused mens penis' to fall off instead of just mere cervical cancer in women we'd see this trend change.
Just an observation.
Our dentist asked my 17 year old daughter if there was any chance she could be pregnant, because he was going to give her gas instead of Novocain to fill a tooth. My daughter looked at him in shock. She said "No. I'm only 17. I'm not even married."
She couldn't believe he even had the nerve to ask her something like that. Did he think she was "some kind of liberal whore?"
A large number of women who stay chaste until marriage get infected with HPV too -- it is the most common infection on earth, and 80% of American adult women are infected. If you decide not to permit your 9 year old to get immunized against HPV / cervical cancer, you're suggesting not only that you're confident that she will never once have sex outside of marriage, but that her future husband won't either.
That may be an ideal, but it's hard to enforce. Giving your kid a deadly cancer seems like a high price to pay.
OTOH, it could be the anti-vaccination crowd again.
Good grief! These parents are stting their kids up for cervical cancer! It's at this young age that the vaccine is effective and there is no guarantee that a young girl will be chaste, even with a solid conservative upbringing. And there is no guarantee that her future husband will be free of the virus, too. Is avoiding being insulted more important that not dying of cervical cancer? There is more good than harm in getting this vaccine. Any daughter of mine will get the shot.
I don't know enough about the jab itself to discuss the drug. However, I think HPV is the result of multiple sexual partners, IIRC. Therefore, those with conservative sexual values (yes, we exist) are insulted that our children would be forced by law to be administered a drug that prevents behavior-induced consequences. We would rather raise them properly than to simply innoculate them against all of their decisions.
Correct me if I'm wrong...
80% of American women get infected with HPV by the time they're 50 years old. Although HPV doesn't always cause cervical cancer, virtually 100% of cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV.
Are you suggesting that 80% of American women are "liberal whores?" Maybe you need to get that chip off your shoulder.
Why worry? It can be detected with a simple pap smear and can be easily treated. I'd rather she take that route than inject something into her body that can't be removed later.
you are truly dreaming.
I had the same objection to the Hepatitis B vaccinne now required for school age children. I was actually told by the nurse that my son needed the vaccine because so many kids became sexually active before they were 14. My son was 12 at the time. I said " not my son". I wish I had known more about the vaccine at the time. Now I refer to it as the pedophile protection shot.
HPV is mainly (we believe) spread by sexual contact. But millions of American women who have only had one sexual partner still get infected. If you keep your daughter from getting vaccinated, you're expressing confidence not only in your daughter's future behavior, but also in her future husband's future behavior -- if he's had even one other sexual partner, she will be at a substantially increased risk of contracting HPV.
HPV is not HIV -- 80% of American adult women have HPV.
Too many people are ready to jump on the governement band wagon when it comes to forcing us to do things to our children against our will.
One thing that should be considered is this: Are we getting the real info on this virus? Does it REALLY cause 70 percent of cervical cancer, or is this just another way to sell a designer drug? What are the side effects of this vacination? Have there been test groups to see what the long term effects are?
Don't be so hasty to subject everyone else's children to something that might be dangerous to them many years down the road. As I said in my first paragraph, no one is stopping people from having their daughters vacinated, if you wish to do it, feel free.
What? 80%? FReeper please.
