Pelosi backtracks, now says Samoa NOT exempt - FOX

According to FoxNews, pelosi now says Samoa is INCLUDED..

Her trickle-up theory apparently won't go over very well with the people there, as their representative had this to say (pay attention to para 2) regarding the devastation of the Samoan economy if this goes through:

"In a statement in response today, Faleomavaega (American Samoa delegate) said "despite recent claims made by the Washington Post which suggest that American Samoa is exempt from the federal minimum wage process, I wish to set the record straight." He says since 1956, the Wage and Hour Division of the US Department of Labor has conducted Special Industry Committees every two years in American Samoa to determine minimum wage increases.

"While these Industry Committees have been phased out in other US Territories due to their more diversified economies, American Samoa continues to be a single industry economy. In fact, more than 80% of our private sector economy is dependent either directly, or indirectly, on two U.S. tuna processors, Chicken of the Sea and StarKist. As has been repeatedly stated at our Special Industry Committees, a decrease in production or departure of one or both of the two canneries in American Samoa could devastate the local economy resulting in massive layoffs and insurmountable financial difficulties," the Congressman says.

"For this very reason, I do not support efforts to apply mainland minimums to American Samoa at this time. The truth is the global tuna industry is so competitive that it is no longer possible for the federal government to demand mainland minimum wage rates for American Samoa without causing the collapse of our economy and making us welfare wards of the federal government."

Any idea how much money the US government already gives to the tuna industry via programs such as W.I.C.?????? Canned tuna is among the items available via the W.I.C. program. If tuna prices go up, then will the government continue to subsidize the industry? Will the government pay more? Or will the government pay a lower rate?

Anyone know if Pelosi actually voted for the bill? If so, given that her hubby owns an interest in El Monte, does that not violate House Ethics rules requiring members to abstain from voting on bills for which they have a financial interest?

They should use the ethics process against Pelosi just like Bonior used it against Newt--Turnabout is fair play...

aren't the 100 hours up yet?

100 congressional hours bears no relation to real time. They operate in their own universe where the laws of physics, economics and common sense are quite different from the real world.

"Does this apply to Puerto Rico also?"

No. Federal minimum wage increases apply automatically to Puerto Rico.

He doesn't understand that the negative effects of the minimum wage will be offset by the beneficial effects of a massive tax increase.

So American Samoa has always been excluded from federal legislation pertaining to the minimum wage and they're still excluding, is that how you're reading this?

Because that's how I'm reading this.

from what I understand, the dems are defining the 100 hours ONLY as pertains to their agenda items promised..per her website, they've only used 23 hours and 24 mins so far..

The territories (with the exception of Guam) can't afford to impose this higher minimum wage. Their standard of living is below that of stateside Americans.

I liked Fred Thompson but I think he got his gut full during the Clinton Administration. I think the honest get out and don't look back. The corrupt stay for as long as they can pick our pockets while diverting out attention.
