US troops will leave Iraq “in coffins”: Sadr aide
AFP ^ | January 12 2007

A senior ally of radical Iraqi cleric Moqtada Al Sadr warned on Friday that thousands of the planned 21,500 extra US troops en route for the war-torn nation would “go home in coffins”.

Launching a new strategy to rescue Iraq from civil war, Washington told the government of Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki, who owes his job to Sadr, it was on “borrowed time” and declared new “no holds barred” military operations.

A cornerstone of the new approach is increased pressure on Iraq’s neighbours Iran and Syria -- which are accused by Washington of fomenting unrest -- and tougher action to deal with militias such as Sadr’s feared Mahdi Army.

“The American people have to prevent their sons from coming to Iraq or they may return in coffins,” threatened Sheikh Abdel Razzaq al-Nadawi, a senior official in Sadr’s movement, slamming the planned US troop increase.

His threat compounded tensions over the detention of five Iranians in a US swoop on an official building earmarked as a consulate in Arbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, which Tehran branded a breach of international law.

Sheikh Jaber Al Khafaji, another close Sadr aide, also slammed the new US strategy during his Friday sermon in the Shiite holy city of Kufa.

“The Sadr movement rejects the new mundane policies. Their new strategy targets the faithful and believers who rejected the occupation, injustice and bondage,” he told worshippers.

I would rather round them up, then let them go when "cleared", than ignore their presence until they did something evil.

I have no doubt that troops will enter sadr city. It remains to be seen whether President Pollyanna will allow them to locate and destroy the enemy. I think he may just order them to walk around and be sniper and IED targets like has has for the last 4 years.

In fairness, the airborne landings in Afghanistan, the run to baghdad, and the battle of fallujah were properly run.

Agreed. The President is 100% right in sending more troops... but SO FEW!??? 20k isn't gonna make much of a difference. Another 100k maybe. Although the most important thing is that he LETS THEM DO THEIR JOBS.

Up till now he's had em pretty much hogtied. How on earth Cheney let him away with it I'll never know....

Do I detect a tinge of desperation in his remarks?

Please, please, please, friends in the news media and Democrats, stop them from coming!

Because like Vietnam, our leaders are tying the hands of the troops. We aren't feared anymore.

Our leaders are worthless.

If we think he is hiding in a mosque, we should be blowing it up and asking questions later. It's too bad we aren't fighting this war how it has to be fought. The Islamofacists are laughing at a policially correct ways.

I am all for making 5 million martyrs if that is what it is going to take. Treating these terrorists with some unfounded respect because they are some phoney religious leader just makes matters worse. You have to be tough with terrorists. Once you show weakness, terrorist jump on it.

Absolutely! If killing Sadr causes a bunch of Muzzies to pick up guns and start shooting at us then we have just simplified target identification.

Why should everyone assume that Maliki should have been able to get hold of that fractured country in the short time he's been in charge? For heaven's sake, those folks had no idea how to rule themselves; they need time to learn! They were under the thumb of a brutal dictator for over 25 years, and though they had the opportunity to go about their lives, for the most part, they never had the freedom of their own persons. They never knew when they might be whisked off the street over some perceived slight of Sadaam or his murderous sons.

Now they've had to deal with Iran's toady, Mookie, and his thugs. Maliki thought he was doing the right thing by being diplomatic, but got run over in the process. It's been a tough learning experience, but I think he's ready to get tough. At least I hope so, for the sake of the Iraqi people.
