It has played several times on the History Channel.
I recall hearing similar things shortly after 9/11, as well, such as unknown middle eastern men in flight apparel who were dead heading, but disappeared after flights were grounded.

My wife and I got a firsthand account (from a passenger) of a flight leaving DFW. It was delayed by a problem with the cargo net. By the time the issue was fixed, the attacks were underway and the flight was grounded.
The ME passengers took off and were later arrested trying to board an Amtrak, IIRC.
My husband had a business acquaintance who was scheduled to fly from Toronto to San Jose/SFO (can't remember which...) that morning-9/11. His plane was grounded and he told my husband that there were 3-6 'suspicious' types who deplaned and disappeared (i.e. no attempt to reschedule/make other arrangements as all the other passengers were trying to do). Coincidence? Perhaps.....

On and shortly after 9-11-01, supposition was that up to 10 flights may have been targetted and had terrorist groups onboard. For various reasons, they were not all able to accomplish their missions. Some speculated or had info that planes taking off on both the east coast and west coast were targetted for hijacking.
IIRC, Flight 93 had a delayed take-off. That was what allowed those passengers to later find out that attacks were underway.
There was a group of ME men who missed a plane in San Antonio (IIRC), and took Amtrack to St. Louis.
We have no idea how many actual terrorist plots were supposed to take place that day.
The original plot, sized down by bin Laden, had planes also in Europe/England being hijacked. That part apparently was cancelled.

That's the one I'm thinking of. According to a passenger we met in Big Sur (the flight was bound for San Francisco), they did get on the flight. It was delayed because of a cargo net (in reality, the pilot probably held it up for his own reasons) and the ME men forced their way off the plane and took off.
IIRC, Moussoui (the so-called 20ieth hijacker) said one time that there were 5 teams who were supposed to hijack planes that morning.
If true, then the 5th team failed to act and disappeared into the throngs of passengers.

The pilot only missed the correct altitude by a few feet. He should have skimmed the Pentagon....continued along the Capitol Mall into the Capitol.
The phone message from Atta about the pending attack said: "A cake with a stick hanging down".....a perfect visual of the Capitol Mall and the Whitehouse.
Perhap he was supposed to be the fifth hijacker for Flight 93 that only had 4.
