Historic passenger lists of ships go online

LONDON (Reuters) - People looking to track ancestors who emigrated from British ports will from Wednesday be able to search online passenger lists of the ships that carried them to new lands.

Released by Britain's National Archives, the passenger manifests give an insight into all long-distance trips made by 30 million travelers from the country's ports between 1890 and 1960, including that of the Titanic which sank in 1912.

Mine came over to Virginia - before the Mayflower. That's on my mother's side. My father's grandmother came over from Ireland in the late 1800's.

I realize the list starts in 1890, but it may prove helpful to someone.

My uncle is into the geneolgy thing and has been for about 20 years. He's retired and well off, so he can pursue his "hobby" with abandon. He has traced our family tree all over the place. Yes, we had ancestors at Jamestown, too. It gets silly after a while. Every generation going backwards you have a doubling of maternal-paternal links....2-4-8-16-32-64, etc. He goes to court houses in different states and looks up birth and death records. The Mormons collect such stuff and they are also a treasure trove of info..........you don't have to be Mormon to use it.........

Mine came over on the Mayflower.......... In the 60's in England they were certain girls that used to be refered to as "Pilgrims" Because they had reputation for coming across in (the back seat of) a (Triumph) Mayflower.....:-)

I might have found my great grandfather, who left England for Australia about 1890, and later got over to California. Hard to tell, because many of the listings (including the one I think might be him) don't include first names.

I have accessed their website and representatives from the local LDS center have visited my office. Also, a relative spends a lot of time at her local LDS library and has sent me some really excellent information. My office holds naturalization records for our county, so I get a lot of requests and often refer people to the Mormons.
