I am wanting to write a story based on a young adult in the 1960s. Since I was born in 1973 all I really know is what I studied in books. But, I want to get beyond love beads and LSD. I want to be able to write this as it really was. I know it's said if you remember the '60s you weren't really there. But, if anyone does remember I would appreciate reading your stories and facts. Thank you.
Maybe if they let them post the 10 commandments, at least that "thou shall not kill" part would sink in and it would cut down on the Columbines.
"I Love Lucy" was in reruns by that time ...
I didn't take any diet pills, but you are right about how they were looked at back then... probably few gave a second thought until Valley of the Dolls came out.
I agree with you and as I said earlier, the 60's had a dividing line between pre-1963 and the rest of the 60's... the country went crazy after Kennedy was assassinated and the vietnam war heated up.
The sound stage manager for Jefferson Airplane lived across the streetfrom me in Richmond.
And you could leave your doors unlocked in Richmond then with little chance of vandalism. My girlfriend raised an orphan colt in her backyard in the middle of town. No complaints.
I turned 18 in 1961.
Joined the Army the same year.
Pulled KP on a Troop Ship for nine days. Arrived Bremerhaven Feb 62.
No live radio or television from the states.
The Cuban Missile Crisis was scary, even in Munich. The beer was good.
Graf and Hoenfels sucked.
The Germans really did mourn JFK's death.
We heard the Beatles more and much earlier than the US (Luxemburg station).
Went to Army Flight School in 65 and Vietnam in 67.
1968 was like no other year - before or since.
Most fun I've had with my clothes on was flying Helicopters in Vietnam.
Went back for a second tour (69 and 70). Different - drugs were rampant and moral was bad.
My dad still has the original slide someplace. I hope to find it someday. The print I have is more than 30 years old, and pretty faded from UV.
BTW: I graduated from high school that year, you puppy!
I'd have sworn you were 24.
"As my mom said, it was all innocent then - the world still had hope, people were upbeat and honest, and you could trust strangers."
It was not always innocent and there were also people that could not be trusted, but you are right when you say that there was hope. Hope because of our UNITY.
Since that time we have imported a large number of immigrants from 3rd world countries who have no intention of ever integrating and some of them even hate this country.
We are slowly becoming a 3rd world nation ourselves under the guise of diversity. This excuse for wanting diversity in our society will do this nation in. Look at the greatest generation who stormed Omaha Beach and Tarawa and you notice very little diversity there. If there was, nobody emphasized it. The same can be said of the people who signed the Declaration of Independence.
What is meant with diversity today is: if you love America and I hate it, we have diversity. Will it benefit America? I am deeply convinced that the destruction of America is done by design because the superiority of one country is not acceptable by the UN. Notice how anti-American that organization is.
Additionally there is an anti-Christian movement underway to destroy the soul of this country. Visit any Muslim country and notice the plight of the few Christians that live there. Yet we allow these same Muslims to invade us.
In a way, you're lucky that you didn't know America in the 50's. Then you'd really be upset.
That was Chelveston the duck on Ray's show and don't forget Cuddly Duddly.
1H (and all the others too)...

No no no, I don't disagree. I think since it was so accepted and natural we didn't realize how important it was and allowed it to be taken away from us. And now we see what's happened since. Biggest reason I'm a conservative.
Other favorite kid songs: "Great Big Gobs of Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts" and the popular "Ooey Gooey was a Worm" LOL
We didn't know those ditties in this part of the country...care to sing a few bars???

The post of the day and the "post of the thread". Actually, this should be the "coda" to the entire thread. Worth repeating, so I have.
- John
I somehow survived childhood without ever hearing either of those. When I was older, friends would refer to them or, God forbid, sing them - but that was the first I'd known of them.
The meatball spaghetti song I put in there was because I first heard it on WLS in faraway Chicago. I thought it was an invention of one of their disc jockeys, so I associate it with WLS.
Not a song, but a little "saying" like the worm song was: "Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. Then Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy, was he?"
I remember the "Fuzzy Wuzzy" ditty too. Cute.
