Tell me about the '60s (vanity)

Posted on 01/09/2007 9:18:52 AM PST by HungarianGypsy

I am wanting to write a story based on a young adult in the 1960s. Since I was born in 1973 all I really know is what I studied in books. But, I want to get beyond love beads and LSD. I want to be able to write this as it really was. I know it's said if you remember the '60s you weren't really there. But, if anyone does remember I would appreciate reading your stories and facts. Thank you.

Eighteen year olds did not have babies out of wedlock (at least in my world).

One girl in my junior high got pregnant and "disappeared." (We never saw her again.)

Almost forgot - Man on the Moon in summer of '69, when I was 10 years old! Wow, staying up at our cottage on Cape Cod and just being absolutely enthralled with that grainy picture and looking outside and thinking, "There's a man up there, right now!" So cool.

In our High School (class of 75) we had a senior smoking lounge in addition to the smelly "B Hall" Lavatory. I went into the same bathroom a couple of years ago and the darn bathroom still stinks!

Riding down to Wildwood with a car load of your best buds. We would stay in flop house for 50 cents a night. You slept in the hallway! One bathroom for all. Hanging out under the boardwalk (yes, like the song) The cops didn't roust you like they do now. Nobody was killing and stealing for crack cocaine. Jesus freaks and pot heads were mellow.

Tying a fishing line to an empty wallet and put the line down through the boards and hold on to it.as you were looking up you could see someone bending down to pick up the wallet and we would give the line a yank.ZIP went the wallet down the boardwalk as you heard a loud burst of laughs.

We bought a new house at that time, and it had a fallout shelter downtairs. How a hollow core door with an inch of clearance at the bottom would protect us from radiation was not explained, but someone has an excellent wine cellar these days.

" Remember those little wax bottles filled with colored liquid you would drink and then chew the wax?"

Yeah! And Wacky Packages too!

Which also brings this guy into mind:

Actually, MMR was an all day classical music station. In the beginning, the "underground" only came on after 9 pm!

WDAS was the other one.

But, I think his name was Mike Cutscoona or some such, got busted smoking pot while on air.

We heard a commotion and Mike excused himself and the air went blank.

They were back on in a day or two.

Pierre Robert was in that mix somehow, I don't remember now, that was over 30 years ago and with too much Wild Turkey in between, so don't rely on my memory.

High times in Philly!

Then DAS went black underground and MMR went all day rock.

Skateboards appeared in my town about 1965, and they were all homemade -- by nailing skates to a board.

Because most Moms stayed home and didn't drive, everything came to the neighborhood. We had the milkman, knife sharpener, Fuller Brush guy, the Dugan man(he brought bread and baked goods, Mister Softy,Good Humor and we even had trucks that came down the street that were rides.

We had the Freihofer man (a bakery in Upstate NY) who delivered our cakes, cookies, bread, etc. on a truck. Only I thought he was the Riddler (he looked like him) and would hide whenever he came.

I went to Catholic school and we happened to have the day off. I remember climbing a tree in a neighbors yard when a Mom came running out of the house screaming that the President was shot. The rest of the day all the Mom's & kids gathered on the street to ...cry. I will never forget that day or 9-11 for as long as I live.

I was in Catholic school at the time as well. The principal came on the PA system at first and announced to us that "something terrible" had happened but she couldn't tell us what it was.For some time we were left in suspense and were pretty scared (7th Graders we were). The whispering that ensued was regarding nuclear war! Every time we heard an airplane fly over we thought it was going to bomb us.

Just as was the case with our parents generation regarding Pearl Harbor (or FDR's death) we'll never forget where we were when we learned about JFK...or 9/11.

Oh hell, I forgot about those.

My uncle still has one buried in his yard somewhere. We were going to dig it up in the '80 to prevent it from caving in, but everyone forgot were the stupid door was.

Its still there, somewhere.

I remember the jingle MMR had when they were classical.

Michael Tierson was a DJ.

WIBG was the AM station that tried to sound FM.

Ours was just a 12x12 cinderblock room right off the family room. Very cool temperature, so as I said, perfect for a wine cellar. Protection from the Russians - not so much.

We had that kind of scare when JFK decided to stare down the Russians over missles in Cuba.

The nuns rounded us up and sent us home early.

Every jet passing over was noticed.
